If I switch to Three because of their ‘Go Roam Around the World’….

….and then they stop offering it (I want to use it in Spain, France and the US within the next year), would I be able to get out of a 12 or 24 month contract, when that was the principal reason for signing up with them?

Only if you told them upfront and got it added as part of the contract. (so that is a no then).

Yes, that’s rather what I feared. I’m reluctant to commit for 12 months in a changing environment, but I’m not sure I have  much choice.

Looking at these T&C closely recently, it appears common to say that you have to have used the element regularly for it to qualify as material detriment. No saying that is right (legally or morally), nor if it is enforceable.
Certain OTT members have caused me to add this disclaimer: all advice given is free of charge & as such should be taken to be IIRC (as I don't spend hours researching all answers  )!

I'm not sure of the exact way it's worked out, but believe the guideline 10-ish years ago was that if it added 10% or more over a year, it was able to leave the contract on this basis.

I assume that has changed, but not sure to which extent.

They could potentially go down the vodafone  and EE route. Both have said they will honour the roaming for any existing contracts but not include it in any new contracts taken out from when the change was announced.
There's no guarantees but it seems unlikely 3 will take a different stance.
But you could ask them on webchat about any guarantees so you have a record of the conversation before taking out the contract.
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

3 had go roam(equivalent) before the EU forced it on every one in Europe.

    A core feature of 3.

They also had a largely reliable signal/data speeds in the UK - things do change!  :D

In all seriousness you are likely correct that three will keep data roaming (though the reduced data cap is unfortunate).

Never got a decent signal from 3  in our house, looks like EE (RWG via NOW) is not much better,  O2 is great.

Hutchinson have planning for a new mast not to far away so things might improve or it may just be for 5G.

A fantastic core feature that is going straight out of the window!

My family is all with THREE and although I dont travel much at present, their go roam was a major PLUS, so now, they will lose 4 contracts. Having a limit would of been better but charging a fiver for the USA, no thanks.

The news that 3 are scrapping Go Roam is a massive blow. Pre-Brexit I used it in several countries, not just in Europe, but in places like Brazil and Singapore. It's incredibly frustrating because all this was anticipated in all the debates around Brexit.
