All bets are off when it comes to using a UK SIM in the EU post Brexit. Regardless of previous “no plans to introduce roaming charges” statements, plans change and roaming arrangements can change too. EE are a particularly expensive example at £2 per day.

A friend uses an O2 Classic PAYG SIM in Spain in a dual SIM phone, and has previously been there many months at a time without incurring warning texts or charges, the phone is almost entirely used to receive calls. Now there is a 90 day EU travel limit, unless you are a resident or have a visa, the roaming time limits are academic for most.

Persuading your friends and colleagues to use WhatsApp to your Italian mobile number is one way around the issue, AFAIK the phone will ring the same on a WhatsApp call as it does on an ordinary phone call. I appreciate business callers may not take kindly to using WhatsApp, but given a reasonable amount of data allowance it’s “free” for both parties to use.
