25 years in job....no recognition from company

  • You can't complain about something like this if this has not been a case for anyone else or mentioned in contract etc.

A lot of companies don't organise things for long service it's quite normal these days. Like a lot of people said be happy you have been employed by the company for such a long time. Like someone said you've received wages and that is what people get from work.

I find it strange you wish to complain about something like this, it almost feels like that the company should be priveleged to have you, of course it would be a nice gesture but I definitely would not use the word 'complain' about something like this, first world problems!!

If the company treat everybody the same (badly or good) then that is fair. It's when its down to individual Managers that it becomes messy.

I worked for a American company that gave an award after just 3 years. Currently got 5 years to go to reach 25 years for the the current company. They have 20, 30 and 40 years awards. Now your just a number. Don't fret the small stuff.

    Well l beg to differ.

I worked in an organisation where we set up a focus group so that people who got to 20 years got a gift and extra leave.

In this day and age where people tend to move on quite quickly loyalty should be celebrated. That's someone who likely has years of valuable experience.

In my current role l have picked it up again after someone left after 42 years without so much as a by your leave. The majority of you may think it's acceptable but l certainly do not.
Maybe. But that goes both ways, doesn't it? Maybe the employee should be sending a thank you to their employer for *their* loyalty in having employed them for so long!

All posts are my personal opinion, not formal advice Always get proper, professional advice (particularly about anything legal!)

It's not really a question of whether people think it's acceptable or not.  Most responses have simply been stating the reality of the situation.

    Things have changed.

In 1940 my grandfather received a chiming clock from the BSA in recognition of his 25 years service. My father received a thank you from his boss (small local firm) for 25 yrs in 1972. I received absolutely zilch from Civil Service in 1995.

Be grateful that they even remember your name!!
And be grateful they have. In 1940 you had next to no employment rights, and most people lived in real poverty The bloody clock didn't make up for that!

Where I work (public sector) they actually do still do long-service awards. You get the most god-awful cut glass rose bowl emblazoned with the coat of arms after 25 years. I am grateful only for the fact that I haven't worked there 25 years and won't ever! And not just to avoid the rose bowl - although that is certainly an incentive to not do so.
My grandfather was (I think) a foreman, lived in a (then) recently built 3 bed house with bathroom (owner occupier) in a nice suburb and owned a car, so lived well by the standards of the day you describe. The clock was prominently displayed on their bureau and remained in the family for over 60 yrs by which time it had ceased working
If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales

People don't stay in jobs for life anymore and long service is not necessarily seen as a good thing.
When my husband retired after 37 years service he didn't even get a card and although it upset him, it also proved he was right to retire.
  • Any thoughts on what I should do gratefully accepted. I have been working for this company now for 25 years. On my anniversary a few days ago there was no recognition from the company at all. Nothing other than a day late e mail from my line manager. I want to complain but not too sure if I should. Any thoughts???
I presume you thanked them for keeping you employed, paying you for the work you did and being a great employer (I mean if they're not great why are you still there?)

I got a 30 year long service letter a couple of years ago  “from” my director.

I say “from” because a couple of weeks earlier,  my directors’s PA dropped me a note saying could I let her have a summary of my career in the department, roles undertaken,  highlights etc. to go into my official 30 year letter.

which then turned up with my content cut and pasted verbatim into my director’s letterhead.

What value this process was supposed to have  escapes me!

I can see the anguish that you've given a symbolic portion of ones life to working for a single company some kind of recognition would be nice.

And to be honest it would be nice, and I think it's a great gesture but I expect a lot depends on individual company culture too - if the company is just one of those indifferent type ones you're better off focusing on yourself, i.e rewarding yourself as you can probably do it better and more genuinely anyway.

Basically what i'm saying is, forget it and go for a pint.
  • If you are running a company, you can put in place whatever you like.  No business "should" do anything except comply with the law and their employment obligations.

Ok, maybe it would have been nice for it to be acknowledged, but it wasn't.  If you feel so strongly and actually want to celebrate the 25 years you could bring in something for people to share to celebrate.  I'm not sure it would occur to me to be upset about this.
