Defaulted on a savings account 😱🤯

So my credit file shows a default from 2017.
It’s some company called link financial whim I’ve never heard of.
But relating to an account with the cooperative bank.
They say I owe £ 145
BUT the only account I ever had with Coop was a savings account which was closed in 2016
Therefore no credit agreement and therefore should be no default as I’ve never had an overdraft or credit facility with them.

I’ve challenged through my credit file as I don’t recognise the debt.

But I’m thinking that they have acted unlawfully applying a default for a savings account. ?

Wait until you find out what it's for. It won't be for the savings account.

They have said it’s coop but I’ve only ever had a savings account with them so confused

That's why you have to wait for their response.

It could be an incorrect entry against your file.

Need to wait, you cant do anymore than that.
It cant be a savings account, I can't see how you can default on a savings account.
Its either a current account with a savings account or its an error on your file.
You could maybe write to Co Op asking what accounts you have held.

Little point challenging through your credit file, all they will do is ask the creditor if the information is correct, they will say yes, bang, back to square one.

If you do not recognise the debt, you should first write to Link (as they have now bought it) and dispute the fact the debt is yours.

This will in turn set in motion a chain of events that will involve getting the COOP to rummage through there archives for any evidence they may have that backs up their claim.

If it is found, it will then be presented to you, or if it isn`t, the matter will end there.

That is the way to dispute a debt.

This, as mentioned above, will not be for a savings account, its either a previous debt you have maybe forgotten about, or its fraud of some kind, or, more likely, just a simple mis-trace by Link.

If it is some kind of error, or fraud, then the whole thing can be dealt with satisfactorily, so don`t panic.

There could be fees to withdraw the money from your savings account, so the £145 is the fees for taking the money out?

Or there was a mistake and the OP was given more than they had in the account when they withdrew the cash.
  • I spoke to link who are going back to coop for me.
The account was opened in 2003 they say which would be about right but as I said it was most deffinately a savings account.

A/ can a bank put a mark on your credit file for a savings account. Especially as a savings account shouldn’t be able to go overdrawn?

B/ I never signed a credit agreement, so how can they default me.

If I do in fact owe the the 145 pounds I’m happy to pay it but still wondering how they can default me on a savings account

  • Sooo I had a letter back from link financial they basically sent me the original application form which clearly states it’s a cash saver account !

But no proof I owe them anymoney

I’m going to write back and say I still don’t have proof the debt Exsists.

As no CCA or statements proving I owe them money.

But do I have grounds to get default removed on the grounds that it is a savings account ?

    No.

You need to find out if it went overdrawn.
