Remind me to use porcelain next time! 🥴

When you and your guests are being plastered in casualty, you'll explain that the previous patio was not at all slippery, but there was some efflorescence.

I've just done my kitchen and patio in these

    Look great, and non slip

Nice indeed. Do they need sealing?

I know a few paviors who seal both sides of the sandstone slabs before laying. It is a bit more work, but they reckon it does help with the staining problems.

I don’t think mine were sealed on the back. Know they weren’t on the face, that was something we would have to do ourselves if we want. Thought it best to leave that for a while whilst they settle.

    Might not seal at all.

Don't seal till all the efflorescence has gone.

I know it’s not dot and dab.. more swirled or ridged?
Did you see them doing any of the work?  Were they really splodging the mortar down at random like the patterns on the slabs?

I really wasn’t watching them lay the slabs. Working from home but at the front of the house not the back.
Wish I had paid more attention to be honest but trusted them to know what they were doing.

Essex your new patio looks amazing! To me the pattern is attractive, it also looks like rain water is drawing natural salts. Really well laid to. Result!
Stuart that step is just lovely. No chance you're in the west country?
What part of the West country?

I haven't. Nothing in the instructions says they need sealing.

But I may do a bit of reading to see if it's wise. Thanks.

We did seal them prior to grouting. But that sealer stops the grout from sticking to the tiles, they're quite 'rough' / textured, but you wash that off when you wash the grout off.
  • Thanks Rdwill - yes, I saw the mention of sealing pre grouting, so wondered how porous they were.

Could the efflorescence showing on Essexgrl's slabs really be coming all the way through from the cement bedding? Does that really show up like that - ie where the mortar is making contact? Could it not just be from surface water penetrating the slab, and then drying out, bringing out with it the salt content of the material?
