Care Home Costs

I sold the house that me and my mother held as joint tenants.
My mother was in a care home and her fee's were covered by income.
I have now been approached with some outstanding costs.
My question is as we held the property as " joint tenants " which automatically transferred to me on my mothers passing, am I liable to pay this outstanding bill, there was no lean put on the property before my mothers passing.
And as far as I'm aware my mum had no estate or will.

When you say her fees were paid from income do you mean she fully funded her care from income or were the LA paying some of those fees?

Your mother owned half the property so half the value of the sale was hers. She did have assets when she died.Bobbydue said:I sold the house that me and my mother held as joint tenants.

No, under joint tenants it automatically transfers to survivor and is not part of her estateMojisola said:

As property held under a joint tenancy will automatically pass to the surviving joint owners it will not form part of the deceased's estate except for the purposes of calculating inheritance tax.

Was the property disregarded for payment of care fees or was there a deferred payment scheme to be repaid when the house was sold?Bobbydue said:

If your late mother had an income to pay full fees, was this perhaps from a pension that died with her? It seems unusual that the income and fees exactly matched with no surplus to form an estate.0

Presumably from the care home...Bobbydue said:I sold the house that me and my mother held as joint tenants.

Have the care home itemised the bills? e.g. what period it covers? Or if it was for incidentals such as haircare, podiatry etc?
