We used to have a Smeg fridge freezer.  They are expensive units of average quality - you're paying a lot for the aesthetics.

The other half paid a ridiculous amount for a Smeg kettle and it is much the same.

Our replacement Hotpoint fridge freezer is much better, and less than a third of the price.

I've just replaced our awful tall Hotpoint fridge with a Bosch and I'm extremely pleased with it. It's the quietest fridge I've ever owned and the temperature is pretty constant on every shelf.

We moved out of our old house and left behind a Bosch that I'd bought 13 years before as an ex-display that had a dent in it (inbuilt). No issues to speak of.

We're just onto our 3rd fridge in 21 years, but both times it was the moving house that dictated losing the fridge freezer.  Before the Bosch, we had a freestanding Fisher & Paykel that used to beep to warn you when you'd left the door open. That moved house with us no less than 8 times until we went for the inbuilt.   If ever a fridge freezer would have been encouraged to break, it was that one, but it stood up to every move.

We've gone back to F&P, with an American style one this time because I appreciated that function, they make attractive appliances and we needed more space!

Never had an issue with noise, but this one is near enough silent.  The only thing you hear is the ice tray tipping out fresh ice, and that's if the room is quiet.  The ice tray is another thing.  Be still my beating heart! 😍😍

Our - free-standing - Smeg fridge freezer is 24 years old and still going strong, although I can't deny it has a few idiosyncracies. Despite this, we love it 😍
    That is good going!

i have a tall Bosch and never hear it. It is fab
  • Cheers all for responses so far, Smeg isn't sounding that great after all.

    Another option: Siemens

Another no for smeg from me. As mentioned by others, our smeg fridge looked lovely, but by the time we got rid of it every single piece of plastic inside had broken. A technician who came out to fix it when it was still under guarantee said the the plastic they used became brittle when cold!

We have an built-in john lewis branded fridge freezer, which we bought 6 years ago when we moved in, but only actually got built in when we redid the kitchen last year - quiet, beeps if you leave the door open and pretty capacious.

Can anyone recommend which brand might be the most well built, or use the best quality parts out of Smeg / AEG / Bosch, or any others you might recommend?

My current Neff has an open back at the bottom where the compressor is, so my first thought was a unit with a complete metal back to reduce this type of noise.

I assume you are aware that Neff and Bosch are the same company and many of the items are identical other than some stylistic elements?

My fridge freezer is Samsung (RL60GZEIH_SSL, not built-it) and it's very silent. No problems during 6 years.
We have a Samsung fridge and freezer, the fridge has been fine but the freezer has been written off 3 times in 2.5 years and the stainless steel finish it was bought in is now discontinued so their proposed solution was either a plastic silver or white finish to go next to the SS fridge... thankfully their legal department had better ideas when the court papers arrived.

The one thing I would say about our Samsungs is their internal capacity, particularly the freezer is much bigger than anything else at its price point (or even double its price point) and is only out done by the brands that cost the same as a car... does make you wonder if they've pushed things too far.

Personally, out of the brands listed, I would go with Bosch, though when we replace ours it will be with a Liebherr (unless I win the lottery)

Our integral fridge freezer is a Smeg.  15 years old and no problems.  Quiet, as well.

That replaced a free standing Hotpoint fridge freezer, which is now in the (integral) garage and is still working perfectly at the grand old age of 28.

    Perhaps we've just been lucky?

Yep, and like Doozer's previous Fisher & Paykel, it has moved a few times with us - four in our case, iirc - and had a period in storage between our last house sale/purchase 😉

Like I said though, I admit it has a few quirks - it's definitely not the quietest fridge freezer in the world and a few internal plastic bits have broken over the years. I'll be sad to see it go as I can't imagine it'll last much longer....not sure what I'd get to replace it, tbh....

Certainly not a Hotpoint as we've had bad experiences with their white goods in the past and we'd both want something with the style of the Smeg. DS has a Gorenje FF, but says that's not as good as our Smeg.

I'd love a Wolf subzero - but don't think we could stretch to the £30k some people we know paid for theirs 😮😮😮
