Some of the advertised prices for used cars seem to be clearly unrealistic.

Some people went along and put unrealistic prices. I watch number of car models. SLK55, 2015, one owner. In June put on Autotrader at 36.5K. Recently went down to 34.9K. A few days ago, £30K. And maybe now, someone will bite. That's 6 year old car. These cars were cheaper at 3 years old.

A convertible will always command a premium in June when the sun is due.  As September approaches, dealers just need rid of them.

Yes, you can buy lease cars from VWFS and Leasys, that's two companies I know about. Other are not keen on selling their leased cars (PCH). However, I never got reasonable quote from VWFS. Prices were either way too high or similar to retail and approved used. Approved used gives you 12 month warranty, fix some niggles, kerbed wheels, etc. And when you buy at the same price form VWFS, you get nothing.

Meanwhile, I have an Abarth Spider that we purchased directly from the lease company in February,

Good to hear, as there are many on here don't seem to believe you can buy leased cars.
Assuming you do mean lease, of course, and not PCP (fingers crossed you mean lease...)
Yea it was a lease. I think it was Leasys. Transferred straight into my name and very simple. Son called and asked for a settlement figure to buy the car outright and was given one within 24 hours.

Can you give me examples of these others who aren't keen on selling their lease cars?
I'm interested, as I've dealt with loads of different lease companies over the years (company and personal) and yet to come across one that won't happily sell you the car.

I paid a decent price, below anything that was on Autotrader at the time.  As it was also done two months shy of the three years manufacturers warranty it enabled me to drop it off to the dealer to sort the niggles, which in the case of the spider was mainly the seat headrest hoops being rubbed by the roof and the exhaust valves sticking open.
As son had owned the car from new and it was low mileage I knew it's history and how it had been treated so lack of a 12 month warranty didn't worry me.

My neighbour wanted to buy his leased Audi from Arval, but they said no. I think Mercedes (MBFS) was allowing to settle whole value of the car, so basically buy it, but I asked about it in 2013, so long time ago and not sure what's current situation.

What do we think the long game will be here, when (if) prices stabilise?

Will we go back to "normal" depreciation, or will the prices collapse to end up where they would have been under normal circumstances?

So if you'd usually expect to lose £1000-1500 a year, but this year you actually gained £1000, will prices then lose just that £1000 or drop £2500 in one go?

No views or predictions on this....I'm amazed!! 😉
How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.60% of current retirement "pot" (as at end May 2025)

Interesting, because Arval are one of the companies that openly advertise the fact you can buy their lease cars.

  • I can't comment on it. That's what neighbour told me, he wanted to keep the car.
