I never wanted to dodge responsibilities, it just seemed unfair that you pay tens of thousands of pounds to a company, plus thousands of pounds for rubbish disposal, yet you need to babysit them in case they do something they're not allowed to do.

Sounds like a good result if it hadn't been escalated to enforcement.  You should still take photos of the area today to have your own record that the material has gone and is has been left tidy.

As for the BiB, the same thing applies to other aspects of building work - you also need to make sure they are building to the plans and not contravening planning requirements or building regs etc.  If not, you need to employ a project manager to do that for you, although legal responsibility is still likely to fall on you.  Likewise, in some situations you could have responsibilities under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, and the CDM Regulations.

Yes, and it is understandable. And that's why we paid a building control officer to check everything (it then turned out we didn't have to, but that's another story). But if I pay someone to do a job, I expect them to follow regulations.

We've done everything by the book since day one because we knew we couldn't be on top of everything, due to personal circumstances.

But yeah, I guess that's lesson learned now.
