Tell talk-talk that you will sue if they take £50 from your account for the router as they are in breech of contract on the part 7.2(a)  of their T& C's which states that you own the router.
You will be claiming the £50 plus costs and compensation, even if you only go for another £50, and give them a set period to respond, like 14 days, not working days, the day after you send the message/email to them.

Most, not all, ISP's block their routers so that they cannot be used with other providers.
    Twitter transcipt:

You won't be charge once you return the equipment to us. Nikki

When I cancelled my broadband contract by phone, I told your assistant that I did not agree to return the router as it is MY property. I read out Clause 7.2 to her. This conversation should be recorded by TalkTalk

I will not be sending MY property to TalkTalk

I will, however raise a county court claim against TalkTalk if you try to charge me for keeping MY property.

I understand where you are coming from, it was not documented here though about the equipment. Let me check my resources here and see what we can do I'll be back. Nikki

Thanks so much for waiting, here is what I can do, I will raise your concern to the relevant team so you won't be charge for not returning the equipment. I'll get back to you once done. Nikki

I look forward to hearing from you Nikki.

Thanks for waiting, I managed to raised this to the relevant team, you don't need to return the equipment, and rest assured that you won't be charge for it. Is there anything else that I can help you with? Nikki

No, that's great thanks Nikki. Perhaps you could share this information with your colleagues so other customers aren't threatened with illegal charges for holding on to their own property - I certainly intend doing so.

You are most welcome, though there are instances that an equipment doesn't need to be return, I'll take that as a feedback to improve our service. Thanks also for your patience and understanding. Should you have anymore queries, feel free to message us okay. Thank you again and keep safe. Nikki

Who needs NHS workers as heroes when here on MSE we've got our very own Rudolph.

Who wants to join me on Thursday by standing on our doorsteps and giving him a round of applause? Is 7pm okay with everybody?
  • Just switched from Sky to Vodafone and Sky have sent me an email saying I'll be charged £50 unless I send the Q router back in the (to be) supplied packaging. Hmm, what to do?

I'm concerned about TalkTalk and their persistant failure to comply with their own Terms & Conditions.
No, you're nit picking. If you send the router back, you won't have anything to worry about.

I wouldn't want to use a TalkTalk router even if you paid me £50.

    It's a piece of junk.

Their wifi hub is actually pretty good for an ISP supplied router. Or are you basing your opinion having used their kit?

The ecological alternative is to never switch ISPs (could use Zen...) and pay whatever the "ISP for life" asks each year.
No, the "ecological alternative" is to use an ISP which lets you use your own router and doesn't send out their router upon request. Even better, they give you a discount in lieu of not using their router, eg Giganet.

It’s a piece of junk when you’re no longer a customer of theirs!

Pretty sure tallmansix was referring to their router performing poorly rather than being worthless when you're no longer a TT customer.

I have a spare ISP router being used as a wireless access point to provide a 2.4 Ghz network for my smart home devices. That's without modifying the firmware which can be done to use it with other ISP so not exactly a piece of junk.
