Understanding UK Pink License

  • I think that MMMYY reference is the expiry date of the photocard.
Which if your 70th birthday comes less than 10 years after issue of the card, will be your 70th birthday?  (My photocard was last renewed only a couple of months ago and I hit 70 in seven years time.)

Isn't the date the OP is referring to the month and year you hit 70?  It certainly is on my photocard in the format MMMYY
That's column 11, the date in the future... Column 10, the date in the past, is the date your eligibility for that category started.

The actual photocard itself's had various layout amendments over the years, but the data references are all standardised.
Maybe we are at cross purposes but it's not column 11 I'm looking at (and neither I think is the OP?).

In that sample photocard you've posted I think the OP is looking at the rather faint "greyed out" JAN20 towards the bottom left.  (Just to the left of the "DE" and the "fklnpq" appearing at the foot of column 9.  On my photocard the equivalent of the JAN20 is the month of my 70th birthday - but perhaps that is just a coincidence?)
That's just part of the "layout amendments" - mine (2013 issue) doesn't have any of that down the left, just a non-hologram steering wheel. It's all functionally meaningless, just security stuff.

I wouldn't know how it works in your scenario but you should be able to compare the expiry date of the card with your 70th birthday. If they are the same then I think it's pretty clear that the MMMYY is expiry date of the card. The example given at https://www.gov.uk/guidance/changes-to-the-driving-licence-and-categories provides the detail of changes in 2013 suggests the same. My own shows JAN24 which is the same as expiry (albeit in the front side hologram pre-2013 amendments)

That greyed out date is the next licence renewal. Mine shows May 22 which is the date my PCV entitlement expires, though other groups are several years later.

See where it says " Jan 20 " in the bottom left, that's all I wanted to know, what is that date ?

On mine it's the month in which the photocard expires (i.e. the "4b" date on the other side). What is it you're actually wanting to check?

I and one or two others think it's the next renewal/expiry date of the licence, or your 70th birthday, whichever is earlier.  (In MMMYY format).

Others think it is "functionally meaningless".

    Take your pick...

(What is it in your case?  Is it ten years after issue or is it when you reach 70 - if sooner?)

The MMMYY date on the back of the licence that the OP is asking about isn't in any of the columns, it's in the bottom left quarter just in front of the "DE" and the "fklnpq" in column 9.  It appears under the coat of arms.

(It would seem from other posts that it does not appear on licences issued pre-2013 as it was a 2013 change?)

It is as meaningless as all the swirly stuff on the card, it's just part of the security measures designed into the card. But the month appears to correspond with the more meaningful date on the other side.
