Amazon Prime and UK pricing

Options
My jaw literally dropped when I compared pricing to rent a season of NCIS 16 in Uk vs US.
Its $14.25 in US  vs £59.76 for HD or £45.36 for SD in UK.
Other than price gouging anyone know why such a big difference , its more than 5 times!!!  :(

Special offer in the US? Different licensing terms from the programmes distributor in the US & UK?

Possibly - the HD and SD are same price in US.  But would have thought with this being aired on Channel 5  would not make it this expensive.

Likely licencing and using us as cash cows

Well don't rent it then.  Wait until it becomes a standard run of the mill programme and you can probably watch it as part of Prime at that point which will be £80 a year and all the (inclusive) video you can muster.

At those prices wouldn't it be better to wait for it to become available on DVD?
Someone please tell me what money is

This has nothing to do with Prime.
You can rent shows without it.

But the same question could be asked as to why the DVD or Blu Ray is more expensive or cheaper elsewhere.

If it helps the Streaming price for season 16 of NCIS is the same on Apple TV, £5976 HD or £45.36 on SD. But that is to BUY not rent.
It seems there is no discount for buying the season, its £1.89 an episode, so £45.36 for 24 episodes.
The price is probably therefore set by CBS or whoever the UK distributor is.

Media distribution rights were written in a world where it took 6 months for content to work its way around the world - they haven't caught up to the digital age where you can air a show in the US and have it be available instaltly everywhere else in the world. There's no incentive to change this as it usually favours the big media companies. Happens a lot in Aus where the exact same item can be bought on a US store for a fraction of what they charge Australian consumers (even after taking into account currency conversions).

I'd either look into buying DVDs and a region free-DVD player (US-region DVDs are often cheaper off eBay, etc), use a VPN to spoof you're in the US, or just suck it and pay the price they that are asking for the content in the UK if it's a one-off.

It's an old series that has already been on 5USA and no doubt it will be repeated, they are showing season 17 now, while the newest season (19) releases in the USA this Sept - it's home in the UK is not yet known since Disney closed FOX so SKY lost the channel (inc NCIS) and its library while some of the programmes (walking dead etc) are now on Disney Plus the position of NCIS and the spin offs is not yet confirmed.

(apart from being on prime the first 13 series are on dvd set for £70 - less than £5.40 a series)
