@[Deleted User]  @Neil_Jones waste of time and space talking about the pros and cons of bitlocker etc, this thread is about the ability to retrieve a password for a surface rt so the op can access the photos that they think may be on said device, and having not not used the device for circa 4-5 years I ask are they sure there are photos on it that are priceless / irreplaceable ?..... this thread has gone with the lost password and the photos they want to give the device away !!!!!! I would reset it and if you and others want  to discuss the ins and outs of passwords/encryption of disks/cracking a walnut I would say start a new thread.
Sorry if I am being cynical (well ok I'm not and I am) B)

Show me a web forum that doesn't have sub topics in threads by accident or otherwise.  It is not a "waste of time" re: Bitlocker because Google will come along shortly if it hasn't already, add the content of the thread to the database and sombody will find it in 2023 and consider it to be useful.  It was vaguely related and if somebody reads this thread in 2023 and finds it useful, well good luck to them - I'll never know.

Forums are not a "here and now" thing.  Never have been.  Probably never will be either.  They are just food for the internet spiders.

Glad you found the photos! When you reset the device, does it give you the 'keep my files' option?

After reset, you may want to consider wiping the drive (eg using eraser) before donating.
  • I will update this forum when I reset. I am curious to see what the options are.
