I would agree you're doing the right thing - if the financial situation is that dire - it won't be long before she's forced to take action - and possibly end up downsizing. She's not going to be destitute if you don't pay the £100 she's asking for, if she has all that money tied up in property, but property isn't seen as money in the bank to spend.
