I have a sony bravia smart tv., which I've had for about 6 years, and its brilliant. my friend who lives up the road bought a lg tv at the same time as I bought my sony. his one went wrong a while ago, and he bought another lg. but it somehow lacks quality, compared to my sony. I advised him not to buy lg, now he wishes he had taken my advice.

On the other hand, i've got an LG tv I purchased in 2008 and it's still going strong with daily use 13 years later!

Also the expected life of a TV is often given in 'hours of use' - apparently anywhere between 40000 and 100000 according to Google

So I suppose one question  is how long each day is it usually switched on for.

As with roddydogs, I bought mine from Richer Sounds and it has a full 6 year guarantee. I'm going to buy from them again, especially in their sale.

TVs aren't that expensive now and you deserve a new one for your birthday! Happy Birthday for tomorrow  :)

Under the Consumer Rights Act, if the retailer doesn't want to help you, then you have to produce an independent report to show that the television had a latent defect at the time it was sold to you.

    That's quite tricky for something that's 5 1/2 years.

    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

    Really?

Assuming it's on for ten hours per day that is an expected life of between 11 and 27 years.

Five hours per day (and that is probably more likely) would be between 22 and 54 years!

Does Google tell you who makes these tellies?

    Google it.

Apparently LG is claiming the MTBF for their OLED tellies is 100,000 hours.

I suspect that's the panel rather than the TV though.
  • Tesco were selling smart TV's from £209 this last week.
A voucher receipt popped out Wednesday when doing a food shop giving a fiver of electrical goods.

I've a trusty Samsung TV purchased in 2009 whereas a younger but reburbished laptop gave up the go at 6 months of having it and ceiling light replacements in a property built in 2009 (yep same time as, if not before. the purchase of the still working Samsung) cos lightbulbs don't exist now unless I want to trip the electrics. Ah the TV model outlasting the Lightning!

I just Gooogled 'what is the expected life of a TV' and got several hits - the top one was "The typical lifespan of an average modern TV is around 80,000 hours. Nonetheless, that's just theoretical, and it should last for much longer. You can expect your TV to maintain its current performance for 7 or 8 years."

Some years ago I had an issue with Sony refusing to honour the guarantee on a screen when it failed within weeks of buying it new; after much argument and to-ing and fro-ing, they eventually did replace it, but I've steered clear of Sony products ever since.
