    That's a good point RelievedSheff.

I must admit, I based my comment on the photo of the house the OP was buying in March but have since seen that they are buying a different house as per their post of 7 July.

Looking at the picture on the 7 July posting it's hard to imagine what the offending view could be unless it's something like an abbatoir.

  • Exterior shutters!
Slats angled upwards towards the outside so's light and sun still comes in, but the view below a certain angle can be completely blocked out. Set the required angle, and lock 'em there.

Come on, Bromine - surely that's enough for you to tell? (You could PM me - I promise not to blab...)

Not that I'm completely and utterly desperate to know, of course.

The paper is only able to hint at it, but it's obvious where they feel the corrupting influence originated:
"In April prime minister Boris Johnson visited the site to launch the Government's 95% mortgage guarantee scheme."
Give 'em 5% and they'll just spend the rest on beer, fags and you-know-what.

Thanks everyone for your comments and helpful hints. I was unable to login for a while and was surprised to see so many replies.

Sorry to disappoint but I won't describe the exact nature of the offending view. It's much less interesting than what some of you have described here (@Drawingaline and @AdrianC - sexpond, nice one! ) and I won't be able to convince any of you that the view is offensive to us and we don't want to be on guard all the time. So let's just leave it at that

I suggested potted tree because I don't want the roots getting close to the foundations and causing subsidence etc. We'll have just a few feet between the front wall and the footpath. But it looks like potted tree will be a bad idea (high maintenance, potential of falling and other reasons).

I think I'll just have to walk away from this house. It's a painful decision because we otherwise like the house very much.

Thanks once again everyone, I really appreciate it.

It's a different house. I've been looking to buy for a long time but always manage to find something wrong with the house. Phobia of commitment I guess :s

Our bathroom window has film on and you can still open and close. It goes on the glass only.

There's varying degrees of opaque too, so could be just a 'blur'.

Could you plant the tree in the ground?

    Swap bedrooms?

The issue with opaque film is that it ceases to work when the window is opened.
Bromine - seriously - couldn't you securely attach a planter to the outside cill and fill it with a nice arrangement, including some taller stuff? It'll even make your house look prettier...
Didn't see your post earlier. Nice idea, I'll look into it.

Could you offer to pay to add some height/screening to the offending neighbours fence.
I may not have thanked you but I meant to, honest!

Is it possible to change the window to one with a top opening which presumably would be too high for kids to see out of when open?  You could either get one with opaque glass or just use film.
