Potted tree to partially block view

  • Hi Bromine.
If you tell us the reason you want to hide the neighb's garden, I'll give you a solution
It's green - literally and meta, instant, affordable (about a tenth of the price of one of your trees), and should do the job nicely...
  • Oh, all right then... :-(

Our bathroom window has film on and you can still open and close. It goes on the glass only.

There's varying degrees of opaque too, so could be just a 'blur'.

Could you plant the tree in the ground?

    Swap bedrooms?
Forty and fabulous, well that's what my cards say....

The issue with opaque film is that it ceases to work when the window is opened.
Bromine - seriously - couldn't you securely attach a planter to the outside cill and fill it with a nice arrangement, including some taller stuff? It'll even make your house look prettier...

How about bamboo in planters?  If you pick the right kind that will get 4m+ tall, but as it lets the breeze through it doesn't need the same kind of support as a tree.  Grows faster too, and if you need it quickly it's much cheaper to buy ready-grown tall bamboo than a mature tree.  See some examples of heights of different types here:

    https://www.paramountplants.co.uk/blog/index.php/bamboo-for-screening/

Or if you want more suggestions and to pick the kind that works best for your planned area (sun, shade, damp, whatever) see here:

Just make sure you do plant it in a container of some kind as otherwise it will invade your whole garden.

Like others, I am intrigues about what you want to hide from your children's sight, and whether it might not be better to let them see it and deal with any questions (if it is something like open air sex, then speaking to the neighbours and suggesting that they install some kind of screening might be better!)

For the reasons given, looking at something such as taller plants or non-permanent fencing might work better - or maybe plants inside or outside the window.

Window film would help, and depending on the angles and the area you want to hide, I wonder whether you could consider strategically placed hanging baskets or a large sundial, on the wall of your house, (if the neighbours are to one side)

I've got a rather unusual question. If my house has an unsightly view from upstairs front window, would it be possible to place a potted tree in front of the house to block it? Curtains are out of question because we do want to let the light in but just don't want children to look in a particular direction.

Given that the OP says that the offending view can be seen from the front upstairs windows, I think it's unlikely to be a hot tub or the neighbours procreating in their front garden!!

Unless the OP is prepared to say what the view is, I don't think it's really possible to give useful suggestions as to how to block it.

That rather depends how the houses are laid out. The front of the OP's house could well look out over the rear or side gardens of another house.
