Your friend is wrong. Ask an instructor, not someone who will; advise you what they do, not what they ought to do. You shouldn't be aiming to go through on an amber. You should only go through an amber if it is unavoidable. If you are doing proper observations, then it shouldn't creep up on you, and those behind you should notice your speed gradually drop if you are lifting your foot from the accelerator if you have observed that the green light has been on a while for example.Ermia said:
