Of course you do. Move into a rental property until you find something that you do like to buy.
    This.

I wouldn't be moving into something that I didn't like, you don't have to buy a house.

There are no rentals available; everything available, families are given first refusal. I also do not have any family I can stay with long term, so I’m stuck!

It’s rubbish but it is what it is, I guess. 18 months isn’t that long so will ride it out.

Yep that's unfortunately the situation in most of the country and I agree that you're probably making the right decision in buying but maybe moving again in a couple of years.

    That's the market right now.

We (as buyers, who also have a property to sell) were also advised to move into a rental - but there's literally nothing about. Definitely nothing suitable for us with two children and two pets.

In the end we found a property to buy that we liked, but we needed to move and also considered buying a place to live in for 1-2 years.

    UPDATE

Been to view property again, & I still don’t really like it. But I have no other option but to continue. My property is on the verge of exchange & completion so cannot back out of that sale, & I don’t want to (I want rid of it). Figured though I’ll live in the new house for 18 months, & providing the market stays okish, I’ll sell up & move on to something I want.

What is it exactly that's making you dislike it so much? Are these material things that can be changed?

If it was downstairs you didn't like then I'd have pulled out  but the upstairs wouldn't be a problem for me.  I only go to bed and use bathroom and there is nothing  in an upstairs that can't be configured  extended.

Location is the most important thing then outside space comes next , house can be changed if the two things above are good

Some of the "don't really like" will probably be overcome when you get your own things in. Can you redecorate upstairs in a complete contrast to what is there now? It won't change the layout - though furniture can help with the look of  that, but at least it won't remind you of how you felt when you bought it.

    Time passes (too) quickly.

we bought a house 18 months ago as we were moving across the country and couldn't find "the one" - so we bought a stop gap place, I wasn't sure about it but actually really rather like it - layout is good, garden is the best ever and the people on the estate are friendly. Good outcome as didn't have great expectations for it - not in any steaming hurry to move again

If you feel you really need to buy then buy and no need to agonise and dwell on the negative? Sometimes all you really need is a roof over your head? Even if the layout is not perfect as it sounds like you are on your own you can just choose the best room in the house and “enjoy”? Just make sure there is no obvious problem neighbours, no parking problems if you have a car? Everything else surely there is no need to stress if you have chosen to buy? Life can not always be perfect.
