I can never understand these requests. What matters is the total annual cost, regardless of the s/c's.
If there was a tariff that had no s/c ,but a kWh rate of £1000 per unit, would that somehow appeal to these people?
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • As I pointed out in another thread, PV solar owners with hot water diverters latched on to the fact that for the summer months they could get away with zero charges even though the supplier has to produce bills; man customer services etc. It is not a very sustainable business model. Low users now need to look for a low standing charge tariff as not all tariffs are the same.

No doubt this won’t be the last new thread on this topic…..it appears new users can’t be bothered to do a search first…..and it’s only going to get worse as all the legacy ebico users British Gas tariffs are currently expiring.

I'm sure many on here won't agree with me, but if SSE aren't providing anything for the money you're paying them,  I'd cancel the direct debit. Stopping payments always focuses minds. You bank may be able to recover previous payments if you can convince them you've signed up under false pretences.

The point of these requests comes when you're a very low energy user. At Ebico I spent around  £120 (yes, about 30p a day)on energy and £0.00 on standing charges. Next year I'll be spending around £100 on energy plus about £150 on standing charges. (Figures rounded for illustration so nobody start nit picking on look-at-this-or-that tariff please.)

I totally agree with your premise, it's the total cost that counts, but sometimes the largest part of the total annual cost is bound to be the standing charge, so the question isn't actually so daft.

    Agree 100%.

I have an annex that has very little use, particularly in winter. I was an Ebico customer and paid approx 25% more per kWh for gas and electricity but the zero Daily Standing Charge more than compensated for those high gas/electricity prices. Lots of  people with holiday homes used Ebico for the same reason

Now as stated above, I will have to pay £150 pa in standing charges in future and the cheaper gas/electricity will only be a few pounds cheaper. However I managed to find a tariff with a daily standing charge of 7.35p per fuel 12 months fixed from last month(June) as an 'exclusive' tariff only available through an obscure comparison website. so £54 pa.

I was going to post the information for all on the forum to read, but the tariff has now been withdrawn. For all I know there might be other similar 'exclusive' tariffs available, but you would have to trawl through dozens of comparison websites, and could it be only for certain postcodes??

As rightly stated above, a very low or zero standing charge is not a sustainable business model, so nobody has any grounds for complaint.

The point being made was that you can't just look at the standing charge as the suppliers have become more subtle in their pricing, you also have to look at minimum annual billing requirements and the actual price of the first kWh or so...
All of which you can do quickly just by specifying your actual usage on one of the many comparison sites.
Just looking for the lowest SC may not deliver quite what you are looking for, which is the lowest annual cost.

Entering actual usage on one of the many comparison websites will not always give you the cheapest tariff.

As I stated earlier many of the comparison websites negotiate an exclusive tariff with an energy company; this website(MSE) for example has negotiated several 'special' deals over the years. indeed simply by directly contacting an energy company there have been better deals available.

I obviously tried to find a replacement zero or low Standing Charge tariff for my annex when the Ebico deal expired. This year I tried again and all tariffs shown on several websites had daily standing charges at around 20p for each fuel. However I heard about an Exclusive 12 month deal which I started on 24 June 2021 with a daily Standing Charge of 7.35p daily.

That tariff is far better for me than any others I found and may have suited grizzlebeard and the OP. Only by asking on this type of forum, as the OP had done, will such 'exclusive' tariffs be revealed. I had intended to post details on an earlier thread asking about zero DSC, but on checking found 'my' tariff was no longer available.

As a high user on my other account, a couple of years ago I found an 'Exclusive' tariff  that this website(MSE) had negotiated which was cheaper, for my consumption, than any I could find on other comparison websites.
