Almost all the time as some websites are designed (badly) to only work with IE. So I use IE once in a while.

IETab is a great extension, so you never need use IE again!

  • Glad to hear you've finally made the jump to FF. I have been using it since its inception and haven't looked back since. I've had it on a linux box, windows and my apple laptop with no problems whatsoever. The only snag is that sometimes it does hog the memory; especially when you have a lot of tabs open, but modern computers have so much RAM it doesn't make a difference to me.

The flexibility the extensions/add-ons offer makes browsing the web a simpler and faster experience. There are so many extensions I use now that I could not live without it. Although a previous poster mentions that you'll be bombarded with people posting their favourite extensions, I could not resist in posting the ones I find incredibly useful since you've mentioned you'd like to read about them.

Mouse Gestures: Allows you to use your mouse to go "back" or "forward" or anything else you program the gesture to do. So simple to go back to a previous webpage or opening a new tab that it's now become muscle memory for me.

Scrapbook: Allows you to download webpages to your temp files for offline viewing. Ideal for morning train viewing of BBC news or other websites on the way to work.

Coffee Cup: Is a programmable button "little pic of a coffee cup" that with one click can open multiple websites in new tabs simultaneously. Great for morning ritual web viewing.

Foxmarks: Allows a user to synchronise their bookmarks across multiple computers (platform independent) and puts your bookmarks on my.foxmarks.com for out-of-office viewing a little like del.icio.us. Another option is google sync which does something similar but with the whole firefox profile rather than just the bookmarks.

IETab: Runs Internet Explorer within a firefox tab. You can program this extension so that if a certain website does not display properly with FF, you can program this to use IE whenever it is opened.

Hope these help you save some time and make your browsing experience a better one. Although other web browsers may be more standards compliant (Opera) or more ubiquitous (IE), FF to me is the best of both worlds due to its Open Source pedigree and extension support.

  • HELP FIREFOX IS DRIVING ME NUTS - THOUGHT I'D HAVE A GO AFTER READING ALL YOUR COMMENTS. AFTER WHAT I ASSUME IS A SUCCESSFUL INSTALLATION AND THEN CLICKING ON THE FIREFOX DESK TOP ICON, I KEEP GETTING A GOOGLE.CO.UK SEARCH BOX  - WHERE AM I GOING WRONG  ? HAVE TRIED INSTALLING IT THROUGH VARIOUS LINKS SHOWN BY OPS AND SAME THING HAPPENS :o.

I'VE ALREADY ADMITTED TO BEING A USELESS TECHNOPHOBE, BUT THIS TAKES THE BISCUIT :embarasse :embarasse :embarasse , ESPECIALLY AFTER EVERYONE SAYS HOW EASY IT IS!

    UTTERLY HUMILIATED.

I havent ever tried firefox. I remember some boffin telling me to download opera years and years ago so i did, and ive rarely used IE since. Although since getting my laptop ive kept IE on and not used opera and i miss it terribley! I hate how if i press the back button all the stuff i had written was lost, it really annoys me.

I hate tabbed browsing in IE too, which is bizarre as opera does it to but it doesnt seem right in IE somehow.

Calm down Bertie. Yes I too have a far from my choice of home page now that I'm with FF, so once I've made my decision I will change it. As I normally tend to emails first, it would seem logical to have yahoo as my home page, and from there can select either mail/message or one other (which i've forgotten). Other than that, it is great. I can't believe how fast everything is. Just you get your home page sorted and you will be fine. You will notice that when you make a spelling error, the word is underlined, put your curser on it, rt clic and you are given alternatives.

I was just so frustrated, I forgot to take my caps lock off and couldn't be ar**ed to retype. Well had my dinner and am much calmer now - full stomach and all that.

  • Firefox is fab, bear with it. Have to use IE at work and hate it.

I suggest the 'Stumble' add-on (google it) - a procrastinators dream.
  • If you find yourself stuck with IE at work - you still have a couple of options at your disposal:

    1. You could try to install firefox but rename the firefox.exe in the "program files" folder to iexplorer.exe or whatever it is. I have heard this can get around some company's protection sometimes.

    2. Use portable firefox. All you need is a pen drive and you can run firefox from there. Ideal if you're on the move and can't live without your personalised browser experience. Just google "portable apps" for more details
