The space on the right would be where the SIM goes in the LTE version, it is simply a standard size tray and on your version it is just a blank space.

Less plastic used having a hole as opposed to a solid piece. Who knows?
You aren't the first to be confounded by it. Others also obtained the WiFi only version and then tried to insert a SIM card into the slot.
