I'm sorry to hear you have been burgled, I have been burgled 4 times and is an awful experience. However when I was burgled I was living in a bedsit and it was drug users that kept breaking in, I don't want you to worry they will come back.

You have been given some good advice and have already started to make you house secure, the only thing I would add is talk to your neighbours, let then know what has happened and to keep a look out for when you are not there.

I have a Yale house alarms installed which rings to my mobile if it does go off, easy to install and I hope it is a deterent more than anything else.

    nope sorry lol!!!

It's only got the one handle on one side. PLUS the reason were in dispute with them is because it only has double locks on the side without the handles. So the door with the handle only has the one lock that goes across into the other. Thats why it was so easy to get in :(

    Hi
sorry if anyone has suggested this already but when I was burgled (it was whilst I was in bed and soon after I moved in) I installed sash jammers on my patio/french doors which sound similar to yours ie the doors open outwards and there is one handle. Sash jammers are basically plastic clips that you fit to the tops and bottom of the door and it stops the burglar being able to prize open the door. Any locksmith, security company stock them, dead easy and cheap to fit (about £5 each and you will only need four) but effective. You might be able to get them from DIY shops. I also have them fitted to all my windows aswell.

    Others things I did were:

secure the side gate with a padlock
    fit outside lights on sensors
installed a burglar alarm that goes to a monitoring station, I set it when I got to bed at night as well as when i am out
take my handbag to bed at night, I'd left it downstairs so they pinched it and found my keys
Keep all your curtains/blinds drawn so they can't see in
Keep things like lap tops etc out of view as much as possible

You can put "anti climb paint" on the top of fences which is horrible black paint, only problem with that is if cats jump over the fence they get black paws. You could put trellis on the top of your fence which makes it harder for the burglar to climb over.

Otherwise most people have suggested things I would have suggested.

You can get plastic spike strips to fit to the top of fence panels that are hard and would cause them to find another route into the garden. As above, use a thin basic trellis that won't support the weight of a person. It'll break and cause noise.

Use small shingle / gravel on your plant beds or pathways. Again causes noise.

Wanting one with a box for the outside, also alerts me and is loud enough for everyone to hear??

    Thanks
  • Hi there,

My mum and dad were both in the police for many years and they advised me to put venetian blinds up in my flat,as they say burglars are really put off by them. I know that might sound a bit silly but I have a huge phobia of being burgled and this gives me a bit of peace of mind!!

sorry to hear of you plight.

Patio doors have always been an easy area of entry, the extra piece of wood will certainly help but no use for outward opening (french doors)

best advice I can give is to check out the police web site for doors that have higher than average security.

All doors and windows should be fit for purpose (so you could go legal if you believe they were substandard) but the police recommend BS7950 Enhanced security tested products. Try http://www.securedbydesign.com/companies/category.aspx?category=1

    good luck

Buying quality goods which last, should be an investment that saves money. :T
Buying cheap products which fail, wastes money and costs twice as much in the long run.
