Burgled!!

Hey all,
Was broken into on Monday while was at work. After only being in my house 3 weeks.
Basically, looking for ideas of how to keep them out again. They came through the patio doors and i'm in dispute with the home builders as i dont think there safe enough as it was too easy for them to get into. (that was the police saying that) the longer i have looked at them the more i think how easy it was.
I am wondering if anyone knows any sites online to get some more locks for them??
Also, we think they came into the garden over the fence, any ideas of how to stop them getting over or deterring them??
We have been out and bought CCTV camera, floodlight and timers for lights to come on and off.
Feel really scared that there going to come back and need all the help i can get.
Thanks all

I would fit those to all the patio doors. You can get them much cheaper than that.My friend used to put a length of wood on the inside of his patio door so they couldnt force it open
B+Q do a cheap diy burgalary alarm .
I wouldnt bother with the fence, maybe just grow plants that are prickley .
I feel really sorry for you, as i was burgled years ago and every noise at night you think someone is breaking in !0 -
I've never been so scared. Hate leaving the house at all but i refuse to be a prisoner in my own home.:j MOVING TO AUS 12th JULY 2009 WOOHOO :j0

I'm so sorry to hear of this.
I would like to say that i recently purchased a security system that records direct to my hard drive with cameras at the front and back and have fitted security lights. They are available at Maplins.
Theres also a company called ADT, i tihnk, that provide security for your home. Dont know much on them im afraid.

PS. are those locks for sliding doors as mine are ones that open out?? can they be used on both types??:j MOVING TO AUS 12th JULY 2009 WOOHOO :j0

My parents have a length of wood in the door sliders on the floor, so their door can't be opened until you lift the wood out.
For the garden, you can plant bushes to deter burglars.
The most effective is a very prickly bush - ideal for boundaries where there isn't even a fence. It is called pyrocanthus.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pyrocanthus
Notice on the link, under the "uses" section it says "Their dense thorny structure makes them particularly valued in situations where an impenetrable barrier is required. The aesthetic characteristics of pyracanthas plants, in conjunction with their home security qualities, makes them a considerable alternative to artificial fences and walls."
Being burgled is my worst nightmare.
Also, don't want to scare you, but statistically once you've been burgled there's a high chance they'll come back. So you do NEED to make changes - and fast.0 -
I know thats why i want all this done asap!!
Does anyone know any places online to buy plants from?? or any of this stuff just that as i work full time by the time i get home the shops are shut. Didnt want to leave the house at all really.
Think will have to have a go with the plank of wood. Will have to see what piece will fit.
THanks:j MOVING TO AUS 12th JULY 2009 WOOHOO :j0 -
Hi if they are french doors and the house is a new build do you know who installed them ?0

I dont want to cause trouble with them. i am already in dispute. Until it has been resolved then i'm not mentioning anything.
AND BELIEVE ME if it isnt resolved then it will be everywhere!:j MOVING TO AUS 12th JULY 2009 WOOHOO :j0 -
Patio doors are a notorious weak point, If I was ever locked out of my old house I could pop the whole unit out with the help of a spade. Invest in some additional locks.
and spikey shrubs as suggested by others.
Unfortunately, you will never totally secure your property, if someone wants to get in they will, you can only ever slow them down or make your property look unattractive to thieves.0 -

Places such as B+Q sell plants like this, and some of their stores are open until 9pm. For the fences, you can use prikka strip to deter/prevent anyone climbing over them, see http://www.prikka-strip.com/"You were only supposed to blow the bl**dy doors off!!"0
