Given that M$ tend to alternate good/bad/good/bad in their OS releases, does that mean 11 will be a bad one?

There are two things I want:
    1. Local accounts; I don't care for an online account, thanks.
    2. Window transparency effects like Windows 7 or Linux (ie. window title bar and/or window background); Windows 8 & 10 were hampered by a misplaced incentive to keep compatibility with the now defunct phone OS, so that is no longer needed.

@[Deleted User] thanks for that. does w11 require a microsoft account or can you load it using a local account?

Not tried local account and I don't think I ever will, I'm sold on the idea of 'cloud' accounts for computing, makes refreshing installations or spinning up new Win 10 images so easy as all my settings and most apps are just installed as part of my log in - I'm sold on it.

Other essential features like Windows hello for face recognition depend on it and are all part of my daily use of Windows, can't see any benefits personally from local accounts. My bitlocker keys are all stored in my Microsoft account so I don't have to stress about keeping a copy of them and losing access to my data.

I'm probably at a different end of the use case spectrum to yourself, I left local accounts behind a decade ago and never looked back, Google have all my passwords, Microsoft have all my Windows settings, Apple have everything on my phone, Amazon have all my backups on S3 Glacier, it is just so convenient, I'm not device dependent and can be up and running on a new device or fresh install really quickly.
    thanks for that.

I don't use the cloud - everything i have is stored locally.

one reason is that i don't have a landline and all my internet is provided via my phone ie my 3 laptops, 6tb media store etc are not internet connected (unless I switch on phone hotspot of course to do web browsing or desktop banking on a laptop for example)

Windows 11 required your device has TPM2 which rules out a lot of devices. I have 3 laptops and none will support W11.

Check if your BIOS has the Intel equivalent PTT (Platform Trust Technology). My Dell Inspiron doesn't have TPM and so it failed the check. After enabling PTT in the BIOS the checker now says my Dell is compatible.

Some help with where to find the setting for those with suitable Motherboards:

    Motherboard with Intel-chipset

    - ASUS: Advanced -> PCH/FW Configuration -> PTT & TPM Device Selection (firmware)

    - ASRock: Security -> Intel Platform Trust Technology

    - Gigabyte: Settings -> Miscellaneous -> Trusted Computing -> Security Device Support

    - MSI: Settings -> Security -> Trusted Computing -> Security Device Support

    Motherboard with AMD-chipset

    - ASUS: Advanced -> AMD fTPM Configuration -> AMD CPU fTPM

    - ASRock: Advanced -> CPU Configuration -> AMD fTPM Switch

    - Gigabyte: Settings -> Miscellaneous -> AMD CPU fTPM

    - MSI: Settings -> Security -> Trusted Computing -> Security Device Support & AMD fTPM Switch

is there any downturn to enabling PTT in the BIOS before getting Windows 11?

An update - the latest version of VMware Player supports Windows 11; I've installed a Windows 11 VM on my Linux PC.
This particular PC is to Windows 11 spec, but I'll give it a try on an older one over the weekend.
