Hi all!

I am moving house from owned to rented in a few weeks. I have also just started a new job remote working which requires fast broadband and need a seamless (as poss) transition as it'll be difficult to take time off at this early stage (bad timing and a bit stressful). I am with Virgin at the mo but it's not available in the area I am moving to. BT is available though.

Can you guys advise me what are my options for something reliable and fast and can I get it installed before my move in date? Can they do it from outside (previously owner didn't have broadband).

EDIT: Job requires at least 35mbps speed and for me to be wired into router

Thanks  :)

I have 1mb internet where I've just moved to and have been using a 4g router and unlimited sim. Vodafone is the best near me so not many options, but I'm using a Lebara unlimited £25 sim on a 30 day rolling contract, getting 25-30Mb - fine for home working, streaming etc. This could be an option, at least in the short term. Even if you do sign upand get a connection date near to your move, there are other factors out of your control to consider

Thanks flashg67, I should have said my company specified at least 35mbps speed and requires me to be wired into router for the job which complicates matters. Might have to move in with my mum for a couple of weeks  :#

How is your work going to know whether you're wired to the router or not?  Short answer:  They probably won't.

Your internet speeds you can get depend on where you are.  You probably can get 35Mbps.  But likewise you may not be able to either.  Need to wait for previous renter to go (and presumably the landlord will prepare the place ready for you to move into I would hope, wouldn't want to move into a place if the previous tenant happened to live like a pig and and their crap was still there)  before you can take action on the line they're presumably still paying for.

Thanks Neil, I don't know but they were very insistent on it as it's more reliable then WIFI and my job can't afford me to drop off. The house is empty at the mo, they are doing a refurb but I just wanted to know if providers will hook me up before I get the keys and do they need access etc...

All going to depend upon space in the local cabinet and when Openreach would connect you .
Will also depend upon when existing user terminates contract .Is it now cancelled  , could you take over if not cancelled ??

Mobile network may be the most seamless to start with .

You are moving into a FTTP area , so ‘1Gb’ speeds are available , obviously you don’t have to take the fastest speed available , but whatever speed you take should deliver that speed as there is no distance related reduction.
The fact you currently have Virgin is irrelevant if you take broadband service from an Openreach  based supplier, obviously if the place you are moving into already has an active OR service and the current occupant hasn’t contacted their supplier to have it stopped , then your service could potentially be delayed but speed wise , you have the best option available

In the interim you could get a one month mobile data sim and router.

I had a set up with an 02 sim, router and externally mounted aerial and was getting 60mb. Of course options depend upon provider etc and did cost me about 100 for aerial and router but depending upon relationship with your mum that might be a price worth paying 😄
