Charged for opting out of marketing texts!

I recently received a text message from JD Sports telling me about their summer sale - I don't like spam and the the text gave me the option of opting out of their promotional texts, so I sent a message to stop, as intructed, to the number supplied - 60064. I wondered about the text, and whether I might be charged, so looked up my EE bill and sure enough, I've been charged 15p! Now I know this is a paltry figure, but this should not be a revenue stream for JD, and I certainly shouldn't be asked to use what is essentially a premium rate number in order to stop being pestered! On top of that, they're using my data from 2016 - surely I should've been deleted by now?

Anyone else had this from JD, or seen this elsewhere? I think Martin would have something to say about it!

I think with the money Martin made from selling this site, he can probably employ people to delete his texts for him.

I have my phone set up to prevent anything not covered within my package.

Does mean there are a couple of companies I've been unable to easily get to stop sending me marketing texts but...

15p is the standard charge for a text from EE, so JDS are not making anything from it. It is really down to you to know what charges your supplier makes before using a service.
  • I've just had the same, a promo text from JDSports. My phone alerted me to the charge on the opt-out text so I didn't send it but it does make me mad that I can't stop them contacting me without paying for it! You can't block the number either, as it just displays as JDSports and there doesn't seem to be a way to see the data behind it.
I've sent them an email to request they remove my number from their records. Will see if that works.

Create contact from number. Then block contact

My contract allows me unlimited free texts. I also think you may be missing the point a bit here. Being charged for opting out of unsolicited spam is, in my view, an unfair practice. They're using a premium rate number to cover costs they're creating. At no point was I told, including in the text message, that a charge may apply. Are you saying you think this is fair and reasonable?

So if you've been charged for the text message that should have been free, isn't your complaint with EE?

As to the second part (in bold), it seems that JDS haven't received anything from you, so I can't see how they're covering costs by taking money from you.

    I don't disagree it's a nuisance practice, though.

It is quite easy to miss the point when you fail to provide relevant information (such as the fact you have unlimited free texts) in the opening post.
