My current tv is giving up the ghost after 15 years so I'm looking for a new one but am totally confused! There are now tv's you can talk to, "smart" tv's...I have no idea what to get. Will any tv be compatible with my Sky Q box? I have a dvd player and plan to buy a Nintendo switch later in the year for my kids...will I need a Scart socket on a tv for these things?

Any advice is greatly appreciated!!

No scart sockets on smart tv,all hdmi connections. And all your gadgets will work.
More important you should be asking where are you buying my tv from.
Richersounds and John Lewis offer 5year plus free warranty. Id suggest Richersounds, sign up as a VIP and get an xtra year

The DVD Player, unless its donkeys years old, will probably be HDMI already.  If it happens to be SCART, a new unit is £20 on Amazon at the time of writing (or Blu-Ray player at £50, which will play your DVDs).
The Nintendo Switch connects to the TV via HDMI and its own docking station I believe.

I would suggest a mid-range mid-size from a mid-ranking named brand.   i.e.  a £300-400 LG or Samsung around 43 inches.  (Unless your room is quite small or quite large).    Don't worry too much about the TV sound, but do consider a separate sound bar if that's important to you.

I can definitely recommend the Richer Sounds warranty scheme - I had to claim on it, and they sorted it out without any fuss at all.   I didn't even need to find the receipt.

My tv is getting a bit old now and the one thing it is short of is HDMI connections. It's only got 2 and I occasionally have to disconnect one device to plug a third one in.

I know you can get splitters to add extra ports but getting a tv with at least three would save the hassle.

If you can get to Richer Sounds to view then all the better. I highly recommend them.

My advice is to go to the shop and trial out what the menu options are like as this makes a big difference to the UI experience.

I truly do not mean that in a facetious manner.  We like the Panasonic TV's so only buy that brand, really because the UI menu suits us.  For the latest TV, rather than try it out I bought online and then found that the menu is entirely different but had I purchased the more expensive Panasonic model, it would have had the same UI menu that we like.

The menu options, to me, are one of the things that makes the biggest difference.

    Budget?

That drives where you need to pitch your choices.

Sweet spot is 55" for value

As said AVforum is where you can catch up on the tech.

Budget about £400-500, don't need anything bigger than 32" really. :)

For that criteria, I'd be buying this:
    https://www.johnlewis.com/panasonic-tx-32fs503b-led-hdr-hd-ready-720p-smart-tv-32-inch-with-freeview-play-freesat-hd-black/p3563698

It has the Freeview Play, which I really like and also the UI menu that I prefer compared to the new and lower-cost range of Panasonic TV's

With the small screen, there is no need for higher number of HD pixels.

Of course, I am tainted by being a Panasonic fan.  Others may have their own fanbois preferences.

Ask around that's the size people are replacing can probably find one free.

Shouldn't need more than £300 at that size buying new.

Stock may be an issue it model change time.
There may be a decent deal on end of line models.

    Maybe something like the

     LG 32LM6370PLA

A lot of people like the LG user interface.
    Also has frees at.

I would look for 3hdmi, full HD and support for HDR inputs.
