VGA to VGA would have needed another cable so it was the existing VGA to single link DVI-D cable that was used and that might be supporting the maximum 1920x1080 resolution of the monitor.

VGA supports Full HD at 60Hz. Even VGA to VGA.

    That is it exactly.

Existing cable fitted in another port on the back of the monitor and it worked. We were convinced it would require some sort of adapter.  So I could have been using it for the past eighteen months.

    Thanks again.

The only thing I would say is that the desktop icons and the words on the taskbar are smaller than they were.  Have tried changing the resolution to make them bigger but it just makes the viewable part of the screen close in, so will leave well alone now.

    I just need better eyesight!

To acomplish that ypu would change the scaling in the same screen you changed the resolution, rather that the resolution its self. Though depending on the app it might end up tyhe same size, though looking much better! (I use 125% on my 4K monitor and 100% on the 2nd 1080p one, is a little low sometimes but I need like the space!).

I did what you suggested and changed it to 125% and it is back to the size I am used to.

Thanks so much, I can read it easily again.
