System Restore

In some machines restore doesn't work. It does in my MSI but not in my HP Envy. It takes half an hour in my MSI too.

System Restore is not machine specific.  There is usually an underlying reason why it doesn't work, and its usually because something else is interfering.  Its never the fastest operation in the world, never has been.

Why do you think you need to manually create a restore point? Windows automatically creates one whenever system files are changed eg when software, drivers and windows updates are installed. It also does a weekly one automatically. 

The only reason you’d need to manually create a restore point is if you are tampering with the system files and configuration yourself.

System restore is not a backup of your user files and is not a substitute for one - far more important to have a separate backup of user files - do you have one?

Thanks for the reply ,the reason i wanted a restore point was up-dates wanted to download the latest version of Windows 10 (21H1 ) and i thought it best be able to restore if it all went pear shape.
I did not know that it automatically creates restore points and yes i do back up my laptop to OneDrive and also a Maxone 2-5 external HDD .

But you don't need System Restore for that.  Windows 10 has it all built-in:

In previous versions of Windows System Restore was more useful for rolling back after update issues, as that was the only way to do it, short of faffing around in Safe Mode.

But in Windows 10 where the major upgrades are effectively a new version of Windows, using System Restore in this regard will run the risk of leaving the computer in a hybrid state.  It will probably work, but its usually quicker to "go back to your previous version of Windows".

The smaller upgrades (which 21H1 effectively is despite the bump in the build number) it isn't so much of an issue as its just treated as another update.

there is not a lot of change in 21H1 tbh as it is built on the same core as 20H2

Now, when 21H2 aka sun valley comes along later this year I would advise taking a partition image using eg ghostery or acronis before installing that !

Well, I've been pc troubleshooting for about 15 years or so, so we're gonna have to agree to disagree.

Well, I've been pc troubleshooting for about 15 years or so, so we're gonna have to agree to disagree.

So have I actually, since 2004 and occasionally before.  I have never seen a machine that will not system restore just because it happens to be a specific brand of computer.  But yes, let us agree to disagree.
