I think I know what you mean, thank you Normal Castle.  When my first Toshiba Windows 7  'died' and my current Windows 8 one' arrived I struggled for quite a while.  Eventually, with help, Classic Shell made a difference.  Some people (like me) really are slow to learn.

It appears adjusting to a new OS is the problem rather than the laptop. A new laptop should be supplied with windows 10, and old one should be updated to Windows 10.

Don't put yourself down, you're dealing with a software designers idea of how to navigate the os. I often struggle to figure out what to do and wonder why somethings designed as it is. Touchscreen tablets can be even harder to fathom without a mouse, I swear a lot at my new smartphone. I recently read an article from an early Apple designer and even he said modern devices can be difficult to fathom and use

That is so very much appreciated, thank you.  I am looking at " https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/114751843187" this one, although it is above my budget,  does look really good.  So sorry if this is a stupid question but, as I am not accustomed to touchscreen and always use a mouse (with left or right click etc.) is it possible to use a wireless mouse with this type of laptop, please?  The mouse I use all the time is a Logitech cordless one. 

This evening and tomorrow I'll have time to look carefully through all your helpful links - struggling but I really have to move with the times and I'm definitely a slow learner.

Yes; all will work exactly as normal. You just have the added bonus of touching the screen when convenient. It would be my choice too. The 13.3" ( https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/174464193116  ) does have a brighter screen, a 4G modem and a backlit keyboard; though this one is a newer/later model and looks a good all rounder.
Of course if the 13.3" model's features suit you better, it's not a bad choice. 
Just extend that warranty if you can afford it; as some parts will be expensive to fix if they go wrong out of warranty. Unlikely, but £50 for an extra two years isn't terrible.

Just ask if something is not clear.

Using your information I did my homework and thought, the 13.3" one (https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/174464193116) would be best for me.  When I contacted the seller on eBay I was given an offer of £450 - so £49.99 off the listed price.  It was a time limited offer and I was very pleased to accept.

It should arrive by Royal Mail on Friday so that's  my weekend homework  planned.
