FAO electric car owners - an observation

I actually think the ideal position would be central at the rear so you could reverse in. Maybe it would be problematic for loading though. I'm pretty happy with front charging and side charging would slightly put me off that vehicle.0

You appear to have missed the value of Jamo's comment highlighting the offensive and childish nature of the OP's post:silverwhistle said:JamoLew said:Quite happy with my pathetic ICE thanks that can do 500+miles on a single refuel and can then do another 500 if required with a quick 5min refuel ad infinitumSo you're not a 'fellow EV owner' then? Thank you for your valuable contribution..
Nothing clever at all about describing the majority of the population as "pathetic", though I understand the OP drives an Evoke so is also in that despised group.BOWFER said:is it just pandering to pathetic ICE owners who crave familiarity??
I note you also edited out the pertinent element of Jamo's comment:JamoLew said:using language like that isnt likely to endear people to your crusade or point of view

I would prefer to have one charging point at each end to allow reversing in to a space (I have a Leaf which only charges at the front). If you need to park sideways to a charger for some reason the cables are long enough to reach the front/rear.

OP why are ICE owners pathetic? As a ICE owner I have never once wondered why I have a 'side port'. Have you nothing else to worry about?"The Holy Writ of Gloucester Rugby Club demands: first, that the forwards shall win the ball; second, that the forwards shall keep the ball; and third, the backs shall buy the beer." - Doug Ibbotson3

Surely the front end structure is there to 'pander' to pedestrian crash safety requirements, rather than in a misguided attempt to make the thing look more like a proper car. There are plenty of cab forward vehicles with engines such as lorries and buses. There are also cars such as the VW Beetle which don't need anything at all fore of the driving seat. Think back to the eighties and nineties too: there were plenty of aerodynamic wedge shaped cars. The only difference was the angle of the radiator. We can still make vehicles like that, however safety concerns have put pay to sharp noses and pop-up headlights.Grumpy_chap said:
That space, indeed the whole front bonnet area is far more of a pander to ICE vehicle shape than where the charger is. The car could do away with the front entirely except for the amount needed for crumple-zones etc - certainly, the front could go far more aerodynamic wedge.BOWFER said:You're pretty accurate with the sizes.
But remember if it's a nose port, it's space that would normally be taken up by a radiator.
It's weird that the original mass-market EVs (Leaf and Zoe) are both nose ports, but it seems to be becoming changed now.
I really can only think it's for familiarity sake, the actual practicalities of it are a pain.
I am not familiar with the detail of the first Leaf and Zoe, maybe the whole area under the bonnet was simply "spare" space. Some of the latest vehicles have the "frunk", so once the decision is to have a "frunk", you want the space to be as large as possible and not lose a chunk of frunk just for the plug socket.0 -
Im guessing youve removed your side mirrors too?BOWFER said:
Wouldn't a front or rear port still be better though?Sandtree said:
Why on earth do you have an issue with that? Round our way there are a few different road side charging options inc most the lampposts. Its just as easy to see cars with front end charging ports are hooked up or not as you walk past themBOWFER said:I also don't like the fact anyone walking past my drive can see I'm charging.
Would you fancy Joe Public walking past a sticking out charger handle and an open flap?1 -
As I reverse onto my drive I wouldn't want a nose port.BOWFER said:Fellow EV owners, have you also noticed just about every new EV is coming out with charge ports on the side?
What is this all about, is it just pandering to pathetic ICE owners who crave familiarity??
Am I the only one who hates side ports?
I've always found them a pain when you park next to another EV, they're dodgy for anyone walking between parked cars and I also don't like the fact anyone walking past my drive can see I'm charging.
Even Nissan have resorted to a side port on the Ariya, which is hugely disappointing when the Leaf is a nose port....
What's going on....?0 -
