I’ve not tried the Lidl one but the Sainsbury’s taste the difference one is v nice and not too expensive if buy when half price with Nectar (£2). Been tempted a couple of times to try the Aldi one when seen it 30% off in reduced section. MandS one used to be my go to until a few years back when they seemed to change the recipe.

The entire supply of Deluxe Victoria sponge was marked at 20% off this morning, which told me that the shelf is being cleared for a revised stocklist. At £2.39 I was tempted but I know its just too easy to wolf down without assistance. So I bought another mini rose (£2.99) instead.

Good news for Lidl today as it overtakes Morrisons to be the 5th biggest supermarket: https://www.theguardian.com/business/2026/oct/05/lidl-gb-sales-price-cuts-deluxe-range . There is a sustained radio ad campaign for Morrisons atm making the claim that its prices are equivalent to other supermarkets, I simply do not believe this to be true.

I rarely go to Morrison's as we only have one branch and it's right over on the opposite side of the city. I think they, too, have some prices linked to Aldi and Lidl but not all.

They've been advertising widely in newspapers too but when they've run a good promotion (IIRC they did chickens at a good price last year) they seem to have minimal stock and run out very quickly.

I'm happy doing my main shop in Aldi where almost all the prices are good value for money. 👍

Morrisons can charge me whatever they want in their cream cake section in the big stores!

If it is the fresh cream sponge you are referring to I don't disagree, but even the cake monster conoisseur that is me recognises that cream cake is not an everyday food!! Sainsburys are reported to have had a conversation with Morrisons re: potential purchase.

Well you asked so I thought it was my duty to buy and report…..

Lidl Pinot Grigio "Garda" regularly £6.99 currently £4.99 with your Lidl app.

A nice 12% wine so has a bit of character. Lacking something in the aftertaste but that may be because the bottle had been in the back of the car rather than the fridge so wasn't as cold as one might like. But for under a fiver very quaffable.

fyi - White wine cocktail…..1 part gin, 4 parts very cold white wine. In a largish wine glass. Add an ice cube or two if you wish.

Don't blame me it you find it moreish. Works nicely with any French or Italian type wines. Don't think it works with German/Alsatian but your taste buds may be different to mine.

Meanwhile so sad that I missed this year's Niagara Grape and Wine Festival.

    NGWF Princess 1963.

A couple of good buys at Aldi…

    • Specially Selected Tortilla Chips (Sea Salt, Black Pepper and Sicilian Lemon flavour). The chips have a very nice texture and the flavouring manages to be punchy but also quite sophisticated. Very moreish. 150g for 99p (which might have been a red price).

    • Wafer Squares. These arrived a few months ago, but have now been reduced to 39p. Bags of crisp wafer cubes with flavoursome fillings. Hazelnut or chocolate.
