Important once they are renewed you swap in accordance with the handbook to ensure the x drive system isn't damaged.

My 4wd has an annual swap - fronts to same side rear and rears diagonal swap to front.

No-one has said that.  I wasn’t aware it was based on a Mini.
    No?

The newer, 2015-on, is a tubby Mini on stilts, so FWD.
Thankfully I can't see AdrianC's posts, so I wasn't aware that incredibly useful point had been made.

Well, I've always had front wheel drive and, if the rear tyres wear always put new on the front and moved the old front to rear.  Keeping maximum grip on the driven and steering wheels.

Adrian suggests I've been doing it wrong in any case.
The following article seems to support Adrian's advice:
    https://www.kwik-fit.com/tyres/information/tyre-rotation

I apologise if my earlier comments were incorrect and caused any confusion - that is just what I've always done, and no garage has ever told me it's not correct :(
I always go for new tyres on the front too.
Quite frankly I don't care what any 'advice' is, the fact is the fronts do the bulk of everything and in a front wheel drive car the rears do very little apart from keep the bodywork off the ground.
And it's interesting that for all the advice to do otherwise, only Costco insist on new tyres being fitted on the rear.
Kwikfit, ATS, Halfords, black circles - none of them say anything if you fit new to the front.
So until it becomes law to fit new ones to the rear, I'm not doing it.

I love it. When I was at work people used to spend £40K on a car. I used to ask them simple questions like "How many cylinders has it got?" The blank faces. It's unbelievable someone can buy a 4 wheel drive car without realising it is.

Because frankly most people don't care.
I'm quite interested in cars but if you were to ask me how many cylinders my current car has I wouldn't be able to tell you without checking. It matters as little to most drivers as to what diameter bolts hold the fuel tank in place. My mother couldn't even tell you what make/model she drives, just the colour.
Same with driven wheels, to most people it's just a car.

The title of this thread is just so over the top within the context of the following query!

This is true, I took a photo of a BMW 2-series this winter, with snow tyres on the back only.
Mind you, the tyre fitter is 50% liable there.
"BMW, it'll be rear wheel drive..."

The 2 series that looks like a car (F22) is rear wheel drive, the one that looks like every other MPV on the road is FWD, on the mini platform (UKL2).

I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

The risk of a puncture is not related to tread wear.
