I've started to post on this thread a few times, and then stopped, because I really wasn't sure of the answer. But mainly, it's because when me and hubby got married, he brought with him a rather large, steaming heap of debt, and I didn't want it hanging over us forever. We spent 5 years repaying it, and at times we had literally not a penny to our names.
We just have a small car loan now (with a very low apr), and I never want to go back there again, so I suppose that is why I came. The reason I stay though is because I LOVE this forum and the people who post on here. It's the friendliest place on the internet!"I wasn't wrong, I just wasn't right enough.":smileyhea97800072589250 -
Update I found this old thread and realised how many of the posters on it had "kept the faith" and are now debt free or well on their to been. So a big cheer those who have made it (and especially to those who stuck around to make sure they stay that way as well as share some of the wisdom they gained on their journey) and welcome to anyone who wants to add their "Why" or reafirm or update itI Would Rather Climb A Mountain Than Crawl Into A Hole

I came to this site like many others for help. We had £74k of debt and went on a DMP. I felt at first that we were one of a few, and then realized that we were actually one of many.! We are about a third of the way through now, and the motivation I get from reading other peoples journeys gives me the motivation and determination to carry on. I love to hear other peoples success stories and I know that when my debts are no longer, I shall still be a regular on this site. It can be a lifeline to others who are just having their lightbulb moment, when they realize that they can no longer carry on paying ridiculous amounts in debt repayments every month. It has also made me 'aware' of what I am spending, and now look into whatever deals I can get.
Our aim is to get debt free before we retire and then get saving behind us. We are now CASH only people and will be in the future too.!

My why is the fact that my wages, even without taking my debt into consideration are not enough for me to move into my own place.
So I figure kill the debt and then I can look at the situation again.
I will still be £150 a month short of paying the average rent for my area & the bills on top but hey onwards & upwards . . . .DFW NERD# 1175Proud Member of Sealed Pot Challenge #5 ~ 1479 cashless_wonder~*DEBT FREE & LOVING IT*~0 -
I'm a DFW because I want to clear my loan in two years not the six left on it
I want to do this so I can afford a car. Once I have a car I can leave the city at the weekend and enjoy a better quality of life with my OH. Once we have the car we can start looking around different locations to decide where we want to move to, as we recently decided to leave the city and move to the countryside.
We want a detached house, away from people where our cats have somewhere nice to live out their dotage and where we can grow our own veg etc and become more self-sufficient.

I want to set a good example to my kids...the amount of debt we have has only taken a few years to accrue - it's so easy to get into a mess and I'd hate to see them copy us when they get older.
I'd also like to go to Uni to be a midwife once the bump is nearing 2 and I'm happy to leave him/her (find out nxt wk) at nursery all day. I need to do an access course first which I'll have to pay for and there's no way with 3 kids and a uni course I'll be able to fit in a part time job so we'll still be on just the 1 low income.
Once I'm working again a house is going to be the next step so the sooner we're debt free the better.Debts today (11/05/09) £15700 ish aiming to be debt free by April 2011
Baby no 3 due in Oct - all I have left from the previous 2 is a cot so will have to spend money that should be going on debts
Have found baby clothes & bedding and also a baby swing lurking in the loft - not much but every little helps.0 -
I can't even remember how I came to this site... the problems of a 2 second memory:rolleyes:
I really started my DFW journey in Nov when I realised I couldn't go on adding £100+ to my debt every month by using credit cards I never paid off, going over my overdraft limit and borrowing money from my OH to pay over limit charges.
Ultimately I would like to get married and have children without debt hanging over me.
The last 6 months has already made a massive difference- I've paid over £1000 off of my debt, replaced £800 of savings which I spent when I shouldn't have, started saving a little for christmas so that I don't get in a mess again at christmas time and have even been able to afford a weekend away for our 9 year 'anniversary' at the end of May. I could have paid all this off of my debt, of course, but I am enjoying feeling financially more secure and being able to afford things, rather than whacking it on a credit card.
Phew- that was a bit of an essay!0
