A 44K mortgage to pay off.

I have always been careful but went from having two incomes down to one when my husband was in hospital for 3 and half months tail end of last year beginning of this one.

And now all have is my wage and my husbands benefits with possible prospect of my husband never earning a wage ever again due to him having a stroke.

And me being limited to the jobs I can do and the money I can earn due to the fact that I am my husband carer and he needs me to get to hospital appointments and take time off when he is having a bad day. No work no money but my employer lets me work the hours I want.

    Yours

  • I just got sick of paying bills moving money increasing my loans not being able to buy a house having no real back up savings never feeling safe, always wondering if this was the month every thing was going to go tits up and I would be left with no money. It was becoming a real big fear.

I am also the only person in my family with a job, Mum is retired and my two sisters don't work - well one has an on off job that doens't pay very well and the other one lives with a guy who pays for everything as far as I can tell, so if there are any money problems it would be me who has to fix it, so I can't continue being irresponsible with money.
    Nevertheless she persisted.

I found MSE through the Tesco points/Beef in Gravy loophole - there was a quote from Martin in the Mail on Sunday and I thought - I'll read up on that!

I became a DFW a few months later and managed to clear my debt (25k) with the fab DFW lot.

Being MSE is now part of my life - I don't buy anything without checking out whether there is a cheaper option, a free delivery code or a money off code. I think I've bought every single present this year with some kind of discount.

I also use it now for finding the best Savings accounts and I'm often wandering onto the OS board and searching for ideas for using up bits and pieces.

I claimed back my bank charges (although I did that through the CAG website) and I now find myself living on the DFW board just to keep my spending habits in check - I think if I waved goodbye I'd go out and go mad again with my carefully managed savings.

I think if everyone in the UK took on board MSE as a whole there wouldn't be one person who could turn around and say that MSE hasn't helped them in some way.

I think it should be a challenge to the UK - come and see if you can beat MSE by proving you're already the most debt free, savvy saver and spender out there!!!

Oh hang on, that weren't the question was it? :undecided
  • Quite simply to stop the nasty phone calls and letters which used to come from Banks and DCAs asking me for money I didn't have. I lost my job a few years back, and the experience of the 30, 40 (or at it's worst 70) calls a day from various places each day was such an awful experience that years later, I still suffer from sleeplessness as a result. I don't look forward to any post coming in, and I keep my home phone switched off all the time. I've forgotten to relax, and even being £10 in debt now terrifies me.

So, I want to be able to sleep at night knowing I have savings, and that I'm equipped to deal with any calls or letters that come my way.
Almost debt-free, but certainly even with the Banks!
  • Started reading bits on here by accident, just by searching debt, or something like that. I decided I had to do something, when my Husband had to go away to work to make more money to get us out of a situation where we were starting to find it difficult to make minimum payments, were living beyond our means, spending too much then feeling guilty about it & using credit cards to buy everything. We were adding £500 a month to our debt, it had to stop. Reading threads on here, I realise how close we were to being in serious trouble.
I have been bad this Xmas spending, (a lot of things bought with money off vouchers quidco etc) but will not go into extra debt for it, I will just pay less off this month:o
After Xmas I will be back on track.
Lots of reasons I am doing this, 1. To prove to myself I can do it 2. To go back to being a "normal" family with my Husband home. 3. To be able to move house someday?? 4. To pay for a holiday upfront, so I can enjoy it, without worrying about how I'm going to pay for it. 4. I now appreciate every treat, day out, etc. 5. To start 2009 debt free ( wish it was 2008! )

DFW me! Job security started looking a little shaky late last year/early this year and I realised that if I had to find another job which covered all debts plus essentials I was on a hiding to nothing! now I feel I'm finally getting there and will hopefully be DF next year but will still hang around here cos I need to know how everyone else is doing and keep myself focussed on saving more money.

  • Wow, its great reading others stories.

I almost lost everything a couple of years ago due to a run of bad health, luck, relationship, moving county and setting up a new business. If I hadn't been able to move back with my parents I would have gone BC for sure (aren't parents wonderful!!)

I never ever want to be in that situation again. I want full control over my financial future and also the security of knowing that if life throws a run of turmoil at me again then money won't be the overriding factor in how I choose to cope with it.

Thanks for posting this thread and reminding me why I'm here... xx
