I feel let down by Eon

I’ve had an email from Eon saying they now want to change my direct debit to £214 from £83. I’ve had the smart meters in for about 2 years now and never switched them off. Eon want a meter reading but there is no longer the meters that used to be in, just some kind of pads in place as they were taken out when they put in the smart meters. I’ve always done everything Eon have suggested and have been fairly happy with them for years up until now! Surely the smart meters would have been reading the meters?

You should still be able to read the smart meters: they're the devices on the wall or under the stairs and they can't be switched off, unlike the portable shiny toy (the In Home Device).  If you have a working IHD you should also be able to see the readings on it, but make sure the gas reading is in m3 not kWh.
Send them meter readings tonight and ask for a payment plan if they still maintain that there's a significant debt.

The Smart Meters would have read 0000.0 when installed - there may well be a card and / or a sticker on them .

Read them today - the Elec is easy one the display when switched on - look for the letters kW.  Take care with the Gas - as Gerry says look for the reading in m3.  This is the reading you want - do NOT attempt to convert it to kWh.

If your meters have a small keypad press button 9 to get the readings.

In both cases look for the decimal point and ignore the figures after it.

If the Smart Meters have been communicating OK  - your bills will have the letter A against them.

PS  - you say that you have been a customer for a couple of years -  your initial fix would have run out after 12 months.  Did you take out a new fix ? = if not you will have been on a Standard (ie expensive) Tariff.

I hope you haven't fallen into the trap that your monthly DD is an all you can eat  - i't not - it's a contribution towards a kitty.

Have you been submitting regular reads to ensure you are paying enough for your consumption of energy?
do you check your bills and tariff regularly?

Have you checked your online account to make sure the meters are sending readings in correctly?

There is nothing but a blank pad where the gas/elec meter would once be, unlike in the past where I would read the numbers. I need to study the wall smart meter see if I can figure it out and contact Eon tomorrow. Thanks for the advice.

Presumably your Direct Debit  (DD) was increased because you are spending more on energy than £83 per month.  The large increase may imply you are in arrears so some of the increase will be to pay that off and once that has happened your DD should go down again.  You say Eon want a meter reading but I'm not sure why.  They should be able to read your smart meters remotely and if they had not done that they wouldn't know to increase you DD.  If you have been paying £83 per month for over a year and have suddenly been hit by this big increase then I agree Eon have let you down because they should have reviewed your DD sooner.

  • The wall smart meter you refer to is likely to be the actual meter where you should take your readings from, if you could provide a photo or let us know what the manufacturer/model is then we should be able to help you get readings from it.

As previously stated, if the meter display is blank you should be able to see the readings using the IHD, but make sure that it's the cumulative totals, not just today's electricity and gas usage or the gas kWh usage.

    Hi wingobins,

Already some excellent advice on the thread, so thank you all :)

Robin9, has pretty much hit the nail on the head, so I won't go over it again. But this does sound like a catch up bill after a series of estimates. As others have said this is easily checked by looking at your bills on your online account.

If we know the sort of meters that you've got, we can help show you how to read them. I would also be interested to a picture as well, as I'm not that clear from what you've said in your post about their just being pads in the place of the meters.

    Thank you
