Partners son is a Waitrose delivery person
He got taken on (with others) as they (well this branch anyway) were greatly increasing the delivery capacity. From what he says about the sort of places he delivers to I doubt many will quibble at a £5 delivery charge
Some of us live in a modest sized flat, not a large house! Some of us prefer online supermarkets to lug up the heavy items as we're getting old, lol

    Lol

He did visit a modest sized flat in not the best part of town a couple of weeks back. He lugged the shopping up two floors and the lady gave him a £15 tip. He would have done it, anyway, of course

I suspect she might be one person who could afford the £5 delivery charge!

Are they allowed to accept tips?

Not sure. I’ve read somewhere that all the supermarkets prohibit tips, and we’ve certainly had them refused, but I don’t know whether what I’ve read is based on fact or conjecture.

Must admit I’d have thought not but as I say I don’t know with Waitrose

To be fair I am not sure whether or not it was the case that the tip was offered and refused. He is a very honest and new there so I doubt he’d have gone against the rules

    I’ll ask

While looking up Tesco online on Google Waitrose pops up first and this
Save £5 When Spending £80+. Use Checkout Code RQ5PPC2112. Ends 23 August 2021. T&Cs Apply. It's Our Business To Make Sure Your Shopping Is Picked, Packed & Delivered With Care. Hand-Picked Orders. Free Click & Collect. Types: Fresh & Chilled, Wine & Beers.
Maybe they have had a wee bit of negative feedback.  I too shop mainly at Tesco ( with clubcard points to offset cost) and use Waitrose when I want to stock up on certain stuff.  Have to say it would cost me more than a fiver in fuel to get to nearest branch.  Hope the code helps

I asked customer services at the Waitrose which delivered my groceries, and they said no, the drivers were not allowed to accept tips. This was however about 5 years ago.

I'm sure that would be the case, which is fine as a company policy but I really don't see how it could be enforced.  All such a policy will do is to drive the practice underground so that there will be no reliable figures on how many drivers do accept tips.

    I checked with him today

No they are not supposed to take tips (and no he didn't accept the £15)

As Mickey666 said, though, enforcing it is a different matter.

In hot weather i'll often give a delivery driver a cold can of fizzy drink, really perks them up. Last year our postman was very handy on occasions so we gave him a bottle of wine at Xmas. Those "tips" are fine and gestures, i'd not give out cash tips though personally - they are paid to do a job to deliver items, it isn't a tipping industry like waitressing.
