Pleased you’ve had a lovely time SSG. We ventured over the road from the Shambles …..think it’s called Foss way - there is Foss in the title anyway. It used to be a pretty unimpressive road but there were a few little independent restaurants on there last time we were there, but we’d just eaten (We go to the model shop) I know we’ve said we will try one of the little eateries next time we visit.

Finally caught up with all your adventures SSG - glad you had a lovely time up north with your DD. I've never had a fat rascal - and possibly controversially the idea of them doesn't really appeal to me, either!

I'm also heartened by your PB wins too - we've not long started buying them though so I suspect we have a way to go before we start seeing any return!

I had to Google Fat Rascals, I had it in my head they were similar to doughnuts which everyone but me seems to love.  I’m not a cake/dessert fan so like EH assumed I wouldn’t like them. However I do like scones, so having learned they’re similar to scones I think I’d like them. You learn something new every day 😆

  • It was the reference to them being a bit like rock cakes that put me off. My nan used to make rock cakes, it was about the only sort of cake she could make, I think, but as a child, to be told there was cake, and then be presented with a rock cake is pretty disappointing.

I have to admit I love the cakes in the famous cafe but I can take or leave the fat rascal….it’s a cross between a biscuit and scone in my eyes. I have a bit, eat the almond from the top and give the rest to dh 🤔 The other cakes are all delicious…..I had a black currant cheesecake on a cream tea that was to die for 👍

My mum used to make rock cakes, although she wasn’t the best cook, the clue is in the name - rock 🤣🤣 She did used to make a rather nice Scottish shortbread though from a recipe our Glaswegian neighbour gave her. Melt in the mouth 😋

  • @beanielou - thank you for your lovely card. 💕

    Thanks too @WinterWarrior @milann @EssexHebridean and @Sun_Addict for popping by. 😃

I do enjoy a Fat Rascal.😋. But then there's not much in the cake field that I don't like!  They are rather like a rock cake but spicy and once warmed through have a more softer texture. I love them like that with some plant based spread (or butter!).

Milann - it sounded like you were in Fossgate - there is a model shop near there. Have you been to the one right next to the Monk Bar?  It's been there years - DD used to live near there and I always used to pass it when going into the city.

I'm back home now. I caught the midday train which was on time although it took ages to get home from Kings Cross. The guy who picked me up in the car said it only took him one hour and fifteen to get to the station from home but it took over two hours to drive back as we had to go back a different route owing to an accident. I'd still rather get picked up than go via public transport as I usually have a heavy case with me now. I really don't like travelling on the tube anymore, what with quite a few unmasked passengers, and in the past when I've caught a black cab from Kings X to the City to my home station, it's sometimes cost me nearly £40 if the traffic is really bad. I have a YNAB budget category for the airport/long station runs and don't begrudge it one bit!

When I got back I unpacked, put some washing on and sat down and had some peanut butter on toast and coffee.  Later on I had a long chat on the phone with a MSE friend and then fell asleep while watching Strictly on catch-up. I decided to go to bed!

Annoyingly I received an email from easyJet to let me know they have cancelled my flight from Inverness to Luton in January and have booked me on a later one flying into Gatwick!  I've now had to check with the driver to see if he can rearrange the timing and location when picking me up (luckily he can!) and let DD's OH know as well as he will be running me to Inverness airport. I had also booked an extra legroom aisle seat  which I like for my long legs and sore knee, but these had all gone on the later flight so I have a standard seat but luckily was able to reserve an aisle one. EasyJet have emailed me to confirm they have reimbursed the cost of the original seat.

I made a lentil and bean chilli for dinner - this will do me for a couple of nights.

    SCRIMPY MSE RETIREMENT THINGS
Yesterday's spends were travel related. Taxi to York station and then car fare home at the other end.

Today I ordered some hair products from a beauty website where I could get 15% off. I have to use professional products on my 'new hair'

I also ordered some vegan milk chocolate sea salt caramels and peanut butter caramels to send up to DD and OH for Christmas.

And popped up to the Co-op for some food bits.

Are the vegan chocolates nice. A relative has gone dairy ( she will have goats milk) and gluten free and struggling to find any she likes. So far the Galaxy salted caramel bar is her favourite. I’m in charge of taking chocolates at Christmas and would like to take her some.
Yes it’s Fossgate I was thinking of……knew it had Foss in the name. The model shop there has a lot to answer to in this house 😂😂😂
I don’t blame you one bit for being picked up and not travelling via tube with luggage. I know my family haven’t used the tube since the bombings a few years back…..they don’t feel safe. They have fold up bikes and travel to work on those when working in London once they get off the big train from their home. The tube is my worse nightmare. It’s the escalators down that freak me out…..I’ve no problem going up but I remember when I was at college when I first left school - we went to London for a few days on an organised trip to a catering exhibition at Olympia. My first trip to the big smoke on my own at 16 👍😁 A tutor a little worse for wear at 10 in the morning fell the full length down and ended up in hospital. I wasn’t keen on escalators to begin with but this finished me off 😳
