Do Ebay want a direct debit from your bank or sign your bank account up for Open Banking?

They use direct debit. I had two direct debits taken out a couple of days ago, 2p & 6p reclaimed by ebay for the microdeposits used to verify my account. Typical ebay pettiness, it must have cost much more with administration costs etc.0

I have just signed up (couple of days ago) and looking at bank account there is no sign of anything taken out or indeed new direct debits.
Had couple of ebay messages, which made me think it had all gone through ok. Am now wondering if something is wrong.0 -

Did they tell you they were sending two payments for verification?0 -
No, no verification at all. Bank is Halifax if that has any bearing on this.
I had 2 messages in ebay on the 12th saying "Confirmation of set-up for Direct Debit" and second one saying "you're all set up for a simpler way to get paid".
Nothing happening with bank account and no mention of DD so am unsure if this is really set up or not.0 -
I don't believe this is just a simple direct debit. I seem to have the same situation as AndymatAgain. I am a private seller and have been on Ebay for over 20 years. I have recently retired and am downsizing stuff from my attic that i have accumulated over the years. I am now being asked to enter banking details via Trustly. This means that I need to enter my bank passwords into their third party system. I do not want to register my banking password with anyone other than my own bank. This password would also give them access to savings accounts etc, so that doesn't work for me.
Curiously, my wife also has an Ebay account that she uses to sell her old stuff and she only had a very simple process to follow of entering bank account/sort code etc - no Trustly involvement whatsoever, so not sure why different approaches for different customers.
It can't be safe for me to give my main bank password to a third party surely? If something were to go wrong and money was taken from my account, surely the bank would hold me culpable for giving them the ability?
I would appreciate any advice from others. Thanks0 -

Has she got anything showing in her account regarding direct debit or a couple of small amounts being paid in by ebay?
As I mentioned before, I stupidly entered my main bank account and when I went into payments to change it got the trustly thing that you had. Because of that I left my account as it was first entered.
I thought I could maybe change it a bit later but not if it concerns trustly.
Reading t&c it seems that by entering one account details they then have access to any other accounts from same bank.

Thanks for the response Moonpenny
My wife doesn't have this showing as a direct debit with her bank. Neither were any small amounts paid in. She entered her bank details about a month ago and Ebay have made a couple of successful payments into the account which match her sales, so from that point of view it appears to be working ok. As Ebay are now deducting fees at source, there should be no need for her to make any other payments to Ebay (unless there is a need for refund or dispute I guess?)
I'd be quite happy to sign up to a direct debit but not happy with giving Trustly my main banking password. I bank with Lloyds and there is just one central password, so they could access current account, savings account, ISA everything - which would be totally unacceptable. I've noticed that Ebay now have a notice on the sign up page saying something like "please note that Ebay does not have access to your banking passwords that are entered into Trustly" . However, Trustly will have access and that's what I'm concerned about.0 -
I agree with what you say about trustly, I would call it not trustly!
I wonder if it is just different banks that are going through trustly or some other criteria. Seems odd that ebay are allowing this especially as it seems they are asking for confidential info like passwords etc.
My account seems to have gone through like your wife's but I can't be sure all is ok yet as I am not getting any sales at the moment.
I am not concerned about a direct debit being set up by ebay (no sign of that yet) as I understand , it is just in case ebay have to refund a buyer.

Aren't DD's used generally to withdraw funds, not add them? (just a thought).I'm writing a book on plagiarism. It wasn't my idea.0
