Well that is very interesting Clova138. I wonder why I am being asked to accept terms and conditions from Trustly?

After you entered your bank account and sort code, did you get a white box pop up with a green button asking you to accept the terms and conditions? When I get the white box it has a small Trustly logo in the bottom corner?

We had the Trustly thing last year when the business account was switched over but had the choice of the Trustly thing or entering manually. We ignored the Trustly thing and input the details manually.

Is that image a screenshot from your computer? Is there any reason why you can't click on the 'x' in the top right hand corner of that white pop-up box, return to the first screen and click on the "enter manually" button which is just below the 'log into my bank" button?

I did mention it but, like you I am a private seller.

Are you sure you just set up a Direct Debit? Did you see the words Direct Debit? Did you see the Direct Debit guarantee logo? Can you see a direct debit on your bank account to Ebay?

I would really like to know because I have not been offered that option and if a Direct Debit route is available, why have I not been offered it? I would be happy with that option, as I have said.

I definitely have a direct debit set up, it shows in my online banking under direct debits.

I did see the direct debit logo when setting it up and I got a confirmation email confirming the direct debit guarentee.

    The email subject is

"Important: Confirmation of the set-up of your Direct Debit Instruction"
  • Thanks for letting me know Jon81UK. I do not have that option as they want me to either log into my bank via their website or do it manually - both of which are through the third party company Trustly.

There must be different methods for different people. I am a private seller but as I have been selling a lot of Dad's stuff to clear his house, maybe they think I am a business seller and not declaring it?
  • And thanks to the others of you confirming it is a direct debit.

olgadapolga and Clova138 The screen grab IS the manual version!

  • So no one else has had a pop-up window like I had requiring you to push the big green button to accept the Trustly terms and conditions to progress?

I have tried to find somewhere else to add my bank account details for a Direct Debit but with no luck - other than to pay seller fees. There is no mention there as to how they would pay me though and I suspect I have to use the links that they are sending me.

Do you get the Trustly thing come up before or after giving bank details? It might depend who you bank with, I'm with First Direct (owned by HSBC) and I notice someone else with HSBC is also on standard direct debit.
  • I put in the sort code and account number and then it pops up as you can see on the image asking to agree to Trustly's terms and conditions.

I am beginning to think there are different systems for private accounts and business accounts and as I have been selling a lot recently to clear my father's collections after he died, I think the class me as a business seller even though I am not.

They do a soft credit check on you, so maybe you didn't meet some of their criteria.

Some people have to upload a passport scan and/or a bank statement. Some people avoid Trustly initially, but after selling a few hundred pounds they get asked for a bank statement

I had a long on line chat with customer services at Ebay about the terms and conditions of the company Trustly that they will be using to process payments to and from sellers accounts and all I can say is that is very difficult to actually get any definite information about how they will be using Trustly and their PayWithMyBank system.

I do know that Trustly PayWithMyBank provides direct payments between your bank account and merchants. And to do this they are using the new open banking rules that allow third parties access to your bank account amongst other methods. They are regulated by the Swedish financial regulator and by the FCA with a temporary licence (since Brexit).
If you log into your bank through their link, I suspect that you are giving them your information to access your account using open banking rules although I have not been able to get a clear answer when I asked the customer services agent on Ebay. They do say that the manual method is a work around if you do not want to let them into your account but you still have to agree to Trustly's terms and conditions. In there there is a section which says that if you use the manual method then you are not giving them access to your bank account or setting them up to be a power of attorney. But as far as I can see, all the other information you are still allowing them access to. I do not know exactly what we are allowing even by the manual method and I am sort of annoyed that I can't get definitive answers to my specific questions.

More generally I am concerned that although all the journalism I saw talking about open banking stated (including on here) you do not have to agree to share your bank account if you don't want to, financial companies seem to be able to just insert terms and conditions in their agreements for you to agree with when you sign up to something with out explicitly telling you what you are doing. I.e. open banking by stealth. And that Ebay are forcing you to allow them to use Trustly if you want to carry on selling on Ebay.

If this is true, then I would see a very grim future indeed where people have clicked accept terms and conditions on maybe a dozen sites without knowing, and when the unsuspecting persons account is hacked, the bank will be adamant that the person has given out their banking credentials willingly and the person will be unable to defend because they can't easily audit who or when access has been granted to third parties.
