I've got a cheap Three contract deal from TopCashback for my youngest child (too yuong to take a contract in their own name). They were previously on Three PAYG and when we web-chatted Three CS to get the number moved over they also moved the PAYG credit onto the new contract account. Im my case it was only a couple of quid but they might do the same for you?

(This message is probably too late for @BlueVinney but might help others.)
Topcashback don't have any three deals cheap enough for very low users.
Cheapest two I see is £5pm 12m with £22.50 cashback  that's £37.50 for the year

OTOH if you're like the OP with PAYG credit that you;ll lose by switching to a different network, it might still be worth it. The OP had £20 credit so the *additional* cost for 12 months contract would have been £17.50, under £1.50 per month.
