  • I would be very surprised if the holiday goes ahead tbh.
the situation in India could possibly curtail travel arrangements for the summer.

Be happy, it's the greatest wealth :)
  • We are in the same boat also.

Booked in May 2019 for Aug 2020 for Majorca.

Last summer travel started up again and it looked like we would have to go, we didn't want to go so we moved it to same hotel and dates this August at an extra cost of £300 hoping it would be better by then when Tui started offering free amendments, and a few weeks later the govt stopped travel to the islands again and the original booking would have been canc anyway and we could have got a full refund,.

With things the way they currently are we now don't want to go this year still, but Tui say its going ahead as planned.
We are not bothered about Covid itself, being healthy and in early 40s and both will have had jabs by August, and our kids are under 15,  but we don't want to go purely as it will not be enjoyable and will not be the relaxing holiday we were expecting when we booked in 2019..
Wandering around outside in a mask all day in 35c heat will do my head in, all the restrictions on numbers at beaches and pool, eating/drinking out, social distancing etc, etc.. we just don't want to go... and now there's the additional costs of all the testing..

I have emailed Tui at least half a dozen times, but they refuse to do anything at all, and say its going ahead as planned, we can cancel at a loss of £800 deposit... but we have to cancel by end of May to only lose deposit it it starts going up..
If we risk letting it run until closer in the hope the govt prevent travel, and they don't, we will lose even more if we cancel closer the time..

Yes, a dilemma that a lot of people faced last year and it's come round again this year.

At least as your balance is due after the date that our Govt say is the earliest that foreign travel may recommence (17th May) you will have a little time to make a decision with (hopefully) a little more information about what might be happening.

I’m in the same boat as Pollycat  A holiday booked in 2019, fully paid in February 2020 for travel June 2020 moved to mid June this year.  Plus, I’ve had to pay a further £150 A’s this year was more expensive.

We have had 2 vaccines but the additional hassle of travel so soon makes us reluctant to go.  Next year is even more expensive.  £200 to £300 each more.

I am hanging fire and hoping it’s cancelled but if not it looks like flipping again and paying more.
Rather than moving the Holiday from June 20 to the following year did you have the option to cancel for a full refund ?

Yes (answering as pattycake says she's in the same position as me) we did have the option of a full refund at the time our June 2020 holiday was cancelled by TUI (around end of May 2020).
But the (I believe 15% rebooking incentive) was a very attractive offer and we really didn't think we'd be in this position 12 months on.

But there's no point wishing you had acted differently.
Decisions were made on what people thought best at the time.

Exactly, Pollycat.  Our crystal ball was obviously faulty as we never imagined we would be in this position a year later.

Tui have had well over £2k of our money since February 2020.  I was of a mind to cancel and lose the deposit when that was an option a few weeks ago.  My traveling companion thought otherwise and was betting on it being cancelled and we get a full refund. The intel coming from Tui at the moment is they are flying after 17th May.  Unless the destination is red, the holiday is going ahead.  This is in spite of covid testing and 10 days quarantine on return.

As a recent beneficiary of TUI's largesse in granting me a full refund for my USA trip in May due to the Hotel being closed, I can only look in horror at people still awaiting their fate.

Had my Hotel not shut up shop I would be part of the same nerve racking wait and see experience.

I think one salutary lesson anyone (including me) can take from this is take the money and run when offered a refund. Forget about rebooking bonuses.

You can then go to the whole of market with your cash and find someone who is a little more flexible in their approach to deposits and cancellation.

    Hindsight is a wonderful thing.
    It really is.

Don't you think that both me and pattycake would have made a different decision given that hindsight.

So I take it you will opt for a refund this time, if given the opportunity ?

Too right we will!  Lesson learned.  In fact, I shall look to Jet2 in future as they seem to have handled everything over the pandemic in a much more efficient way than Tui.  Their holidays are already cancelled until late June. If we were booked with them we would not be in this predicament now.

Don't discount BA either, their flexibility if far greater than most of the others.

I am also in the same position as Pollycat, having moved our holiday with Tui from June last year to the same date this year. The only faint glimmer of hope for people who don’t want to go is that many hotels still haven’t decided when to reopen. If the hotel you booked does not open by the date of your holiday, you can decline any suggested alternative and get a full refund.
