Completing the return online and getting a tax calculation showing what your liability is not submitting your return.

it is not submitted until you press the submit button.

Until you do the  return will be saved but not submitted.

When you submit you get a reference number sent. That is your proof that it has been submitted.

If you do not get that email then your return has not been submitted   , 

If you have a reference number for submission then HMRC can trace what has happened to the return.


Paying what the tax calculation shows is a separate process and not connected to the submission of the return.

Not strictly true.  Only one of my last three returns has generated a confirmation email.  The confirmations didn't go to spam and the returns were definitely accepted.  However, I have always recorded the submission number at the end of the process manually and checked back a few days later just to ensure the return was accepted.

Never had a confirmation email before, and yet all previous years have had no problem!
