Laptop upgrade

Hello.

I am looking at getting a new laptop as this one is roughly 7 years old now.
Budget £500- £650.
This is what I have at present.
Any recommendations would be appreciated.

What do you intend to use the new laptop for?

Up the memory to 8Gb and set up an SSD.

I agree.  Even the SSD upgrade on it's own will transform the laptop.

Crucial have deals on the BX

    https://uk.crucial.com/catalog/ssd/bx500

    £67   1TB
    £40 480GB
    £26 240GB

Looks like that laptop came with 750GB disc how much are you using?

Could put a smaller SSD and have that as external

4GB stick  probably under £10 CEX

I would also suggest fitting a SSD. I decided to fit one and replace the little internal battery at the same time (easy on my laptop). I also decided to do a clean install of Windows 10, which probably contributed hugely to the improvement I found. I now use the old hard drive as a (second) backup.

The end result is a transformed laptop. For example, before, taking it out of hibernate took around two minutes and even then the laptop was slow for a further few minutes. Now the laptop is up and running in 9 seconds.

And it's quiet too - the fan hardly runs at all now.
  • OP hasn't said what is wrong with current set-up:
    • slow start-up: recently fitted my laptop of similar vintage with SSD and has certainly transformed start-up times;
    • apps run slow: mine has I7 processor and 8Gb RAM so possibly OP's AMD processor (I3 equivalent?) and 4Gb may be limiting dependent on usage;
    • poor display: I have an external monitor as displays on laptops of that vintage tend to be lower resolution than modern ones.
Thinking about it, my external monitor was the best upgrade as after the slow start-up, speed was fine once up and running.

Thank you all for you replys.

The laptop works well but is very very slow when start up and if i am transferring pictures from it to an external hard drive also does not seem able to run with two or three webpages open at the same time, so my problem is just slow i suppose.

i have only used about 350gb of the 750gb mostly pictures and some videos.

How difficult is it to swap the hard drive for a ssd as i would not know where to start.

    Thanks again everyone.

    This one? https://support.hp.com/gb-en/document/c03926737

Will take you around ten minutes to swap the hardware. Page 49 here: http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c03939658.pdf Very easy.
But you need to get organised beforehand. For instance, a clean install of Windows 10 would be recommended; so you'll need an empty USB Flash drive of at least 8 GB.

Creating the Windows 10 USB flash drive

    1. Visit the Microsoft Media Creation Tool website: https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/software-download/windows10
    2. Click Download Tool Now.
    3. Save the Application.
    4. Plug your USB Flash Drive into the PC where you saved the application.
    5. Run the Application.
    6. Accept the EULA
    7. Select Create installation media for another PC and click Next.
    8. Choose the correct settings for your version of Windows 10
    • Language (Country)
    • Windows 10
    • 64-bit (x64)
Click Next.Select USB Flash Drive and click Next.Select the Flash Drive and click Next.

Allow the application to complete. You will be prompted when it is finished and has successfully created the bootable drive.

and a caddy for the old drive: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BLACK-2-5-SATA-TO-USB-HARD-DRIVE-LAPTOP-XBOX-EXTERNAL-CADDY-HDD-CASE-ENCLOSURE/290803420378

    Thank you very much.

I have just watched a youtube video about changing the drive and transferring the operation system, i will read your post very carefully and follow the instructions.

It seems not too difficult so will give it a go as it will be a huge saving rather than buy a new laptop.

    Thank you again.
