Is this "someone" likely to do anything illegal with this information? If yes, what?

Going back to the earlier comment where they point out that all this information is on a cheque, just to add that handing over a cheque also gave the added bonus of providing them with a copy of your signature!

One direct debit which was easily claimed back, but that was published in a national newspaper.

It has come to my attention that someone has my full name, address, bank account no and sort code. Can they do anything dodgy with this info?
Unlikely.  In the old days we used to send cheques that had all that information on.
Don't recall cheques ever having account holders address on them.

But yet it's unlikely they could do much with this information. Most likely would be a social engineering scam where they could use that information to try and convince you that they were your bank. But as your a savvy MSE'er i am sure you will not fall for such a scam. If you do fall for such a scam just make sure the transfer all your money to my bank account, it will be nice and safe in there.

They didn't but quite often when you sent a cheque in the post you were required to put your name and address on the back.

random people cannot setup a direct debit - it is tightly controlled.

We won't take DDs at my workplace as the hurdles you have to jump (the £1million turnover requirement is a big enough obstacle for many) and indeminities the banks require to become an originator are much too onerous for a small company to get involved it.  I've no idea how "scammers" would do it.

But that information is revealed to anybody who sees your debit card (and those old fashioned things called cheques as mentioned earlier)!
