Just to update you guys.. This is what I came back to after work!
Surely I can refuse payment now
what is that? has he plastered over old artex and it has come away?

EDIT i guess its your newly boarded ceiling
I would say dont pay him a penny.

someone mentioned you paid for a professional job, but did you?  was he cheap?
By the look of it stuck on plasterboard then skimmed it, which makes me wonder if that is what he has done to the ceiling what has he done to the walls...
  • They screwed on plasterboard then skimmed it. It was not a cheap the cheapest quote I had either

Wow, well at least they don't have any defence against their poor work.

If you refuse to pay and they want some amount from you they'll ultimately have to take you to small claims, I can't see them getting far after you show the ceiling they installed collapsed, if anything they should be paying for it to be cleared and taken away.

Your recent picture update is the sort of thing that should only appear in "Mr Bean Does DIY". It's just missing a bemused looking plasterer, positioned in a hole next to the ladder, covered in debris.

It's hard to describe this as poor workmanship, I can't see how the word "workmanship" can be applied at all.

Given the above, they are going to struggle to get paid unless they do the job to *some* level of skill.

OMG that is really awful plastering!

This is coming from someone who hired a cheap plasterer who then spend HOURS sanding my lounge ceiling down and filling in all the scratches and bumpy bits!! It still doesn't look great, and painting it just highlights the dodgy bits! We are putting coving up to cover ceiling/wall joins!

So you need to get a very EXPERIENCED plasterer round to quote how much it is going to cost to put right this work, and perhaps someone who is willing to put into writing what a shoddy job the other person did.

The fact the plasterboard they put up has fallen down says it all really... did they not make a hole in the ceiling to find the joists to screw it into???? Clearly not! (yes, we learned our lesson and got a decent plasterer to do our kitchen!!).
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)
  • OK so after a lot of debating I have ended up paying 350 to them for the work they did in the bedrooms which I was reluctant to pay. At first he was having none of it. He said that's what my house insurance is for! That right my house insurance not his liability insurance which I then mentioned about and I mentioned I need to look into the legal side of things to were I stand with what's happen. He then said there's no need to escolate things. But whilst I have been sat here not being able to make calls and sort anything out about it I just thought offer him 350 and hope he agrees, as tbh I don't really fancy going down the legal road of it my self not knowing how much hastle it will be and if any repercussions would come back from it and just say it's a bad experience and to learn from it. I have had a plaster look at it it and said its one of the worst he has ever seen. When I inspected the screws that were in the ceiling half of them on one side of the room was not in joists and I don't think there were enough screws in there plus they were screwed in on an angle so was never going to grip the boards properly it was almost screwed in sideways lol.

I DIY'd my ceiling plaster boards ready for a plasterer 15 years ago.

I located the joists and screwed new joist through the ceiling into them. I then attached the boards to the new joists. No idea if that was right but it seems a lot more sensible than what your 'pro' has done.

Disappointed that you've paid him.....in an ideal world you should have told him to do one, but fully understand that he may have persuaded/harassed you to pay
