Reduced  my YB balance to £1000. Opened another V Plus current account  £1000 in and transferred the residue to another bank. Sorted and onward with the magic carpet ride of foibled current account providers.

Anyone seen mention of any limit on the number of M Plus accounts you can hold?

There is no hard a fast rules, certainly nothing written down in the M Plus terms and conditions. Even when Virgin do write things into their terms they seem to have little appetite for enforcement.
Five seems acceptable, whether six would be acceptable or it would be "poking the tiger" I don't know.

I couldn't find anything specific, either.  Just concerned that when our three Yorkshire Directs become three (more!) M Pluses they'll scream "foul!"

They would by now have notified you if there was anything to notify you about. Perhaps best to just continue to not post about the number of accounts you have with Virgin Money.

Now what to do with the excess £2,000s?
I only used the Clydesdale Direct accounts as a temporary buffer over weekends when the main holding account at Al Rayan can't be depended upon to handle credits and debits, so I found the 0.8% interest on up to £3,000 useful, though the accounts held no more than £1 for most of the month.  With 2% now available, I expect the accounts will be filled up to their £1,000 limit and I'll have to use my normal 0% current account to hold temporary funds...

The conversion of our three Clydesdale Direct accounts has also been seamless - the "personalised" account names have been retained and, thankfully, the account display sequence has been maintained (though curiously, my partner's sole and joint Direct accounts swapped positions).
