Electricity usage has jumped

Looking for some advice on what seems to be a huge jump in electricity usage since moving house.
We lived in a detached, 4-bedroom house last year (rented). Our monthly engery bill (gas and electricity) was £100.25 per month, based on  a standing charge and we actually ended up over-paying for the year. We bought a mid-terrace house last year and moved in December. Our electricity usage has nearly tripled.
I've looked at our bill from our last house for February 2020 and our electricity usage was 283.4 kWh. The same period for our house this year was 769 kWh. There have been no changes to the household (2 adults) and I have no idea how to start investigating what is causing the huge increase in consumption. Does anyone have any advice here?!

Is there a difference in the way the house is heated - underfloor heating or immersion on all the time?
Are the figures taken from actual meter readings or estimates?

All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

Have any of your appliances changed from using gas to electricity? Eg gas cooker/hob to electric? Also, could any of it come from working from home? e.g. extra TV/laptop usage?
  • Hi,
did you provide readings when you moved in?
If estimated, may be based on previous owner usage.

Hi ac, thanks for the quick reply :)
Both houses run on gas heating. The cooker is actually a dual gas/electric cooker and we barely use the electric oven so, if anything, that should have helped lower our electricity usage.
I've been working from home for 2 years so no change there...

Hi - yes. I'm not concerned with the actual cost, what I'm concerned with is our usage. I just don't understand how it's shot up so dramatically...
  • Hi,
have you been taking regular meter readings?
Any idea what your monthly/weekly usage is in units?

Could you tell us the readings from your bills please - include the letters A, C  and E.  Go back until you bought the house - when I assume you read the meter, gave the readings to the existing supplier.  When did you then switch and who is the supplier/tariff ?
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill

But the other members of your household have surely been spending more time at home over the past year adding to the electricity usage. Also, on of your biggest drawers of elec will be your fridge freezer, might want to check how that's operating.

Is it possible in a terraced property that you have somehow ended up being metered for more than just your usage?  Switch off all electrical equipment and see if the meter continues to turn.

Bear in mind that you moved in December, the darkest period of the year.

We moved in November and our bills have been eye watering.  We were in credit with our past supplier ready for the winter so we did get a £400 refund.

We used £125 of electricity in January, but we were forced onto BG standard tariff initially.  I've put much of it down to lockdown, but there's no doubt that we used even more electricity just keeping the place lit up in winter.  Imagine we won't notice it so much next year.
