John Lewis gift card expired
Comments

Yeah I did 4 or 5 times. The last time I've asked to escalate my case and they were supposed to call me back. My card has been issued in 2017 and already extended during regular visit to JL store, so this might be the reason why they are so reluctant. I guess my best option would be an email to CEO until someone in here advise me against it.

For those who need this info - i just had success. I had £250 of vouchers which expired in March 2022 - bought just before the Pandemic hit. Explained that it was my elderly parent who doesn't do online and always swore by JL vouchers - the paper ones - which never ever expired. Our local JL also closed permanently during the pandemic so this might have helped our case. Anyways they have agreed to send a replacement e-gift card for the £250 and reminded to check the balance to renew the 2 years if its not used. I did state that's not very easy for the elderly who don't do online or mobiles (as is the case with my mum).
Anyways I am happy they agreed to re-instate the gift card balance. I originally called the number charleerose30 gave in the earlier thread but when I got through they gave me another number to call - 0330 123 4024.
Very happy and restored faith in JL. They do know how to do customer service well.1 -
I’m in this situation. I think my gift card worth £40 is a year out of date now!!! Going to call and plead tomorrow as wanting to make a £500 purchase from JL . Wish me luck0

They're certainly not the honourable company they once were.Until the FCA outlaws this scam, never buy a gift card. Unless you can get them at a discount, all they do is restrict your spending to the issuer's stores.Stay with good old cash, there's never an expiry date !
I don't purchase gift cards for myself. Why would I? It serves no purpose, they are.. gifts. The clue is in the name. Hardly the first thing that springs to mind when I've received them to ask 'ooh, can you check through your records to tell me what date you purchased them?!'
Who buys gift cards for themselves, most people receive them as... drum roll, a gift so what are you expecting people to accept? 'A fundamental part of the proposition', that is hilarious. I have no idea when they were purchased. Because I received them. Who would buy gift cards for themselves smh.eskbanker said:
Anyone buying a gift card obviously accepts that it can only be redeemed in a limited number of places (typically those of a single organisation), which is hardly a scam, it's a fundamental part of the proposition.
Likewise, what makes you feel that they should be valid indefinitely?
Gift cards with an expiry date should have the purchase date marked clearly on them. Otherwise, yes it is a scam.
What makes me think they should not expire? Because they have a cash value and do not depreciate. Does cash expire? (even when banknotes are re-designed old banknotes can still be exchanged).
Gift cards should never expire unless the company goes out of business. That is all.

You do realise this thread is two years old? The forum guidelines do request that old threads are not resurrected.

There should be no expiry date on gift cards and if they don’t return your money then they should pay it to a charity of your choice also in other countries there’s at least a 5 yr expiry date0

We had a thread on gift cards very recently.
If you buy through one of the reward schemes you will get a discount on a gift card. Typically 4-5%.
Why do you think that is?
Retailers are willing to give discounted gift cards to the public, and pay a commission to the reward scheme, because they know a proportion of them will never be redeemed.
As is often the case, the financially aware are subsidised by others.1
